The match against Olympiacos Volos was of no importance, as PAOK had already secured their qualification to the next stage of the Greek Cup. But there was added interest, as the “Double-Headed Eagle” fielded a line-up full of youngsters from the club’s academy.
This match will remain unforgettable for several of the participants, as their dream of playing for PAOK came true. Melissas, Panagiotidis, Topalidis, Syrakos, Kushta, Kakko, Ktistopoulos, Tselepidis, Dimitriadis and Patralis all made their senior debut. Siampanis, Dimitriou and the Chatzidimpas brothers will have to wait a bit longer. These are not household names, but Igor Tudor decided to throw them all in at the deep end. The outcome was positive.
The match was of high tempo right from the start as both sides played freely and were lively around the two areas. In the 4th minute, Terry Antonis fired a powerful shot that went wide, while ten minutes later Skopelitis of the home outfit created danger for PAOK. In the 16th minute, PAOK netted the opener in emphatic fashion. Kakko charged down the left flank and crossed for Dimitriadis, who beat Daskalakis with a fine shot.
Olympiacos Volos gained metres on the pitch afterwards and managed to equalize in the 32nd minute with a rather lucky effort. PAOK defenders were caught napping and Alamanis scored with a low shot.
After the interval, the “Double-Headed Eagle” started strongly and wasted two good chances to regain the lead through Kakko (47’) and Kushta (49’). The black-and-white outfit dominated the encounter, kept possession and controlled the tempo, but couldn’t score.
Olympiacos Volos tried to react through counterattacks, but it was PAOK who came closer to winning. In the 84th minute, Antonis scored but his goal was erroneously disallowed for foulplay of Nikos Korovesis. A few second later, Daskalakis saved Antonis’s shot, while Korovesis wasted his effort in the last play of the game.
