El Kaddouri provides redemption in the finale

22.11.2020

Omar El Kaddouri scored an impressive last-gasp goal in added time to help PAOK come from behind to celebrate a 2-1 win over PAS Giannina on Matchday 9 of the Super League Interwetten.

Matches coming after a 15-day break due to internationals always come with a warning tag. And in one of ‘those’ kinds of matches, PAOK were heading for a 1-1 draw until El Kaddouri intervened in the 91st minute. The Moroccan provided the solution – and much relief – on his return to action with a winning goal to secure three vital points.

The coaching team handed starting berths to Adrian Pereira and Andre Vieirinha down the left hand side, with the Double-headed Eagle starting strongly, controlling possession, but failing to trouble the visitors goal guarded by Leftheris Choutesiotis. Up until the 31st minute, neuther side registred a meaningful goal threat, and that was when PAS struck against the run of play.

Rodrigo Erramuspe pressed the PAOK defenders high up the pitch, won possession, and then exchanged passes with released Jean-Baptiste Leo, who played in Erramuspe beautifully for the Argentine to finish clinically past Zivko Zivkovic and put his team ahead.

PAOK’s response was immediate, with the home side laying siege to the visitor’s half of the pitch as they searched for an equalizing goal. The hosts missed a string of chances, the best of which fell to Anderson Esiti , but his strike was clawed away impressively by Choutesiotis.

In the second half the coaching team decided to change things. On came Diego Biseswar , El Kaddouri and Christos Tziolis to give fresh attacking impetus to the team, and the affect was instant.

In the 51st minute Karol Swiderski pounced on the rebound after Choutesiotis saved well from Αndrija Ζivkovic to level the match. Six minutes later the PAS goalscorer Erramuspe was sent off after picking up a second booking.

Tziolis came close to putting PAOK ahead in the 59th minute, but his shot cannoned off the woodwork as PAS breathed a sigh of relief.

From that point on the game was all one-way traffic. PAOK pushed forward and played mostly in the final third, with Pablo Garcia introducing Antonio Colak , while Argyris Gianniki’s PAS side struggled to get out of their half as they looked to hang on for a point.

And just when it seemed that they would do that, Omar El Kaddouri came up with a clever overhead finish after Jose Crespo had flicked on a cross to complete a brilliant fightback and claim maximum points.

Team lineups:

PAOK: Zivkovic , Rodrigo , Varela, Crespo, Pereira (76’ Colak), Esiti (46’ El Kaddouri ), Schwab , Murg (46’ Biseswar ), Α.ΖivkovicVieirinha (46’ Tziolis), Swiderski (95’ Wague ).

PAS Giannina: Choutesiotis, Pantelakis, Erramuspe, Saliakas, Peersman, Castro, Siontis, Kartalis, Palmidis, Krizman (25’ Eleftheriadis), Leo (63’ Dominguez)
