«We have a lot of work ahead of us»
Here’s what Abel Ferreira had to say in the post-match news conference after the Super League Matchday 3 clash against Atromitos in Peristeri.
About the match:
«First of all I would like to dedicate my first words to my players and congratulate them. I would also like to congratulate our opponents, who believed in themselves to the end, and I’d also like to congratulate the referee. It was a tough game, with difficult spells for us. The most important thing in football is the result, but we also have to try and select the way in which that result will come. In the first 30 minutes of the game, with all due respect to our our opponents, I think we could have ended the game as a contest.
The goal right at the end of the first half certainly cost us. There were some doubts among the players during the interval and I basically tried to remind them about all the hard work we did this week, and after that everyone did what they had to do today individually to get the result we wanted. We had a great opportunity with Pelkas to make it 3-1 [at the start of the second half], but we didn’t take it and Atromitos then scored to make it 2-2. After that, we went on the attack in a more aggressive way with some changes that we made.
In my opinion, although it was a balanced game in the end, we really showed the belief that we have as a team. We scored a goal and it was ruled out, but then we scored again. We showed plenty of positives about our fitness and mentality today.»
About the club:
«From the first moment I came here, I have felt very welcome and I thank everyone for that. I will do my best to repay the faith showed in me in the best way I can. I came here for the whole package. I am trying to do my best for everything, and to make the team better and offer even more of an exciting spectacle. It’s good to score goals and play exciting football. This will help PAOK and Greek football a great deal, and it will also provide a lot of value to every player. Of course, I don’t forget about the defensive side of things. It needs a lot of work for the result to come. My philosophy is not to wait for an opponent and try to take advantage of a counter attack.
Do you prefer to see a team like we played today in the first 30-35 minutes, or a team that is sitting back and waiting for its opponent? That’s how we played in the games against Ajax [in an attacking way]. Life is a risk. I would also like to mention a much-talked about piece of psychology. We should always have the best case scenario in mind. Because you will either have positive things in your mind and feel better, and those around us will feel better, or you think negatively. And when you do that, even your wife suffers from it.»
About the changes he has made so far to the team:
«First of all, if I’m not mistaken the former coach was here for several years until he achieved what he managed. He definitely did a great job. And now I’m here. The team obviously has room for improvement both in the defensive and attacking areas. I’m here to help us improve. For example, in the set pieces, which today we scored goals but also showed quality defensively. I’m happy for the win because it gives us time and confidence to continue. We have time to analyze both the things that went well, and the things that did not and we can work to fix them.»
About his personal goals:
«We’ll never forget. Last year’s team made history! But it’s a new beginning. I’m here now. I have a certain way and an idea of playing, and it’s not just about the attacking side of things. I’m here to give players more value, to give more value to the club, and show us something better. That’s what I want.»
