Ferreira: «My players know what they need to do»

Abel Ferreira spoke to Novasports to give his insights ahead of the upcoming Super League Interwetten derby clash against AEK at the AEK. Here’s what the Portuguese said from paokfc.gr.

16.10.2020

On the internationals:

«I think there’s a mixture of joy and pride for the international players. On the other hand, we have the fact that we can not have them with us and work with them. This is somewhat offset by the fact that they have been playing and/or training with their national teams, however. Everyone is prepared and we have turned our attention fully to our next match.

Essentially we will only have all of them back for one training session before the match with AEK, since some of those who returned followed a recovery program. We need to be even more consistent with health protocols now and we need to look at every challenge positively and make the most of this situation we have to deal with with the coronavirus.»

On his expectations for the match against ΑΕΚ:

«I’m expecting a real derby clash. We have gone two weeks without a match and we can’t wait for the game. We face a team that is much better than last season. On our part, we go Athens looking to come back with all three points.»

On PAOK’s philosophy and the new faces in the squad:

«The truth is that our opponents also have some new players in their squad. As coaches, however, we both have our own philosophy on the pitch. Nothing has changed in our way of approaching things and the way we want to play. It’s easy to destroy something, but much harder to build it up and create a team from the beginning. We are working hard continuously for a better PAOK.

We are at a pretty good point in this part, it is a project that comes from the club itself, and I for my part want to serve this vision as best I can. We want to win and go as far as possible in all the competitions we are involved in. We want the club to take steps forward and look to the future with optimism.

We are happy to have one of the youngest teams in the league, we are very happy that this is happening and we show that the club has both a present and a future.»

On whether or not Thomas Murg will play:

«Many times we forget that new players who come in bring fresh air and a fresh perspective that a team needs. Murg is young and evolving. He has already given a sample of what he can do, however, it is a bit difficult to assess his adaptation. He is in very good condition fitness-wise, and when we judge that he is completely ready, then we will give playing time.»

On the challenge of managing the squad:

«We have a very good and balanced squad of players. Footballers are not machines, they are people, so what I can say is not to expect any radical rotation, but there will definitely be an element of rotation since we have games every three days. We believe in all of the footballers we have and it’s time for them to prove their worth.

On the other hand, we lso have a specialized group that works on the physical condition of each footballer, so fortunately we have the science that can help us in this part.»

On Adelino Vieirinha and the player’s future:

«I think that in the press conference given by Mr. Kyriakos and Mr. Rebbe  two days ago things were made quite clear. Together we try to make the decisions that are correct for the club. We respect Vieirinha and what he has offered to PAOK, but we will take the decision which is best for the club.»

On whether they will be any new signings in this transfer window:

«We never say never. What I can say about our squad is that I am very satisfied with the players we have at our disposal. They are young with ambition, while we also have experienced players who can help those younger players to develop. They will create an atmosphere in which the only objective for everybody is victory.»

On where he thinks the derby may be won and lost:

«Let’s get on the pitch, and be faithful to our plan. My players know very well what they have to do out there on the pitch. They have to give their best and in this way the chances of winning will be higher.»
