Pre-season vol. 2 kicks off with win in Cyprus
PAOK defeated Maccabi Ironi Ashdod 4-1 in the first friendly match of their winter training camp in Cyprus, where the team is preparing for the Super League restart after the World Cup.
Razvan Lucescu did a lot of experimentation, giving playing time to fringe squad members who haven’t played much so far in the season, while he also made some useful conclusions going forward.
The players entered the pitch with enthusiasm, completely dominated their opponents and achieved a comprehensive victory, while playing some good football in hte process.
In the 10th minute, Filipe Soares opened the scoring. After collecting a pass from Ricardo he beat the opposing goalkeeper with a smart finish. In the 27th minute the Double-headed Eagle extended their advantage. After an excellent team effort, Murg squared to Biseswar and he finished the move to make it 2-0 to PAOK.
Ashdod’s response was immediate and on a counter-attack in the 29th minute, they reduced the deficit it to 2-1 through Andir Levy, but in the 34th minute Brandon Thomas restored the balance and PAOK’s tow-goal cushion by making it 3-1 with a close range shot after an assist by Rafa Soares , perfectly completing yet another impressive team goal.
Lucescu started to shuffle the pack from the start of the second half, throwing on Zivkovic , El Kaddouri, Schwab and Oliveira, with the pattern of the match not changing and PAOK remaining in control.
In the 62nd minute there were seven more changes from the bench, which broke the rhythm of the game a little and after that there were very few chances for goals. The Double-headed Eagle still pressed high and looked for more goals, however, missing some good opportunities through Oliveira, Konstantelias and Schwab .
In the end, it was Giannis Konstantelias who got the last goal to make it 4-1. The young winger took the ball from an excellent pass from El Kaddouri and finished well past the opposition goalkeeper, adding his name to the scorers’ list in style.
