Our story kicks off in 1990. After an excellent season at PAOK, Magdy Tolba<\/strong> is called to the World Cup squad of Egypt. Alongside him, the Hassan brothers<\/strong>, who sealed their transfer to the \u201cDouble-Headed Eagle\u201d before the start of the \u201cItalia 90\u201d.<\/p>\n

Tolba makes history, becoming the first active player of the \u201cDouble-Headed Eagle\u201d to participate in the competition. He features in two matches in Italy, but Egypt get eliminated in the group stage after two draws against the Netherlands and the Republic of Ireland and a 1-0 loss to England.<\/p>\n

The second active player of PAOK to participate in the World Cup was Greek. In 1994, Greece made it to the finals for the first time ever. Their coach is Alketas Panagoulias<\/strong> and \u0391lexis Alexiou<\/strong> is a member of the squad. He featured in the last group match, against Nigeria. Greece lost all their matches (4-0 defeats by Argentina and Bulgaria, 2-0 down to Nigeria) and returned home with a 0-10 goal tally.<\/p>\n\"\"<\/a>\n

PAOK fans enjoyed the <\/span>1998<\/strong><\/span> finals stress-free, as no player of the \u201cDouble-Headed Eagle\u201d was present. However, after the completion of the tournament and the coronation of France as world champions, PAOK announced the signing of World-Cup participants <\/span>Adolfo Valencia<\/strong> (Colombia) and <\/span>Patrice Abanda Etong<\/strong> <\/span>(Cameroon).<\/p>\n

In 2002, in the tournament held in <\/span>Japan<\/strong><\/span> and <\/span>South Korea<\/strong>, PAOK were represented by <\/span>Ifeanyi Udeze<\/strong>. His <\/span>Nigeria<\/strong><\/span> were handed a tough draw, in the \u201cgroup of death\u201d consisting also of <\/span>England<\/strong>, <\/span>Argentina<\/strong><\/span> and <\/span>Sweden<\/strong>. The \u201cDouble-Headed Eagle\u201d defender watched from the bench as his side lost their first match to Argentina 1-0, but would be a starter in the upcoming two encounters. The <\/span>Super Eagles<\/strong><\/span> played a goalless draw against <\/span>England<\/strong><\/span> and then lost 2-1 to Sweden.<\/p>\n\"\"<\/a>\n

After the tournament, PAOK FC announced the signing of <\/span>Marek Ko\u017ami\u0144ski<\/strong>, who featured in all three group matches of Poland in the World Cup.<\/p>\n

There were no PAOK representatives in the <\/span>2006<\/strong><\/span> edition of the tournament. Four years later though, in <\/span>2010<\/strong><\/span>, three \u201cDouble-Headed Eagle\u2019s\u201d players made the trip to <\/span>South Africa<\/strong>. <\/span>\u039aostas Chalkias<\/strong><\/span> and <\/span>Stelios Malezas<\/b><\/a> were rewarded for an excellent season and were included in the Greek list for the finals, issued by <\/span>Otto Rehhagel<\/strong><\/span>. However they remained unused subs.<\/p>\n

The third one, <\/span>Pablo Contreras<\/strong><\/span>, became the first PAOK player ever to celebrate qualifying to the knock-out stages of the World Cup finals. His <\/span>Chile<\/strong><\/span> finished second in their group, defeating <\/span>Switzerland<\/strong><\/span> and the <\/span>Honduras<\/strong> y 1-0 and losing 2-1 to eventual World Cup winners <\/span>Spain<\/strong> in their last group stage match. In the round of 16, Chile were eliminated by Brazil. <\/span>Contreras<\/strong><\/span> got to play against the <\/span>Honduras<\/strong><\/span> and the <\/span>Sele\u00e7\u00e3o<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\"\"<\/a>\n

Dimitris Salpingidis<\/b> was also present in the South Africa competition and, after the World Cup, he returned to PAOK. In the encounter against Nigeria<\/b>, he became the scorer of Greece\u2019s first ever goal in World Cup finals. The blue-and-whites won 2-1 and also earned their first points in the competition. On the last matchday of the group stage, Argentina<\/b> proved an insurmountable obstacle. Messi\u2019s gang won 2-0 and our national side ended up paying for their defeat by South Korea<\/b>.<\/p>\n\"\"<\/a>\n

Next stop, the <\/span>2014 World Cup<\/strong><\/span> held in <\/span>\u0392razil<\/strong>. The arrival of <\/span>Ivan Savvidis<\/strong> at PAOK filled their roster with Greek players. The national team of Greece earned the World Cup ticket with a fine qualifying campaign and celebrated for the first time their participation in two consecutive final stages.<\/p>\n

With <\/span>Fernando Santos<\/strong><\/span> at the helm and <\/span>Giorgos Tzavellas<\/strong>, <\/span>Panagiotis Glykos<\/b><\/a><\/span>, <\/span>\u039aostas Katsouranis<\/strong>, <\/span>Dimitris Salpingidis<\/strong><\/span> and <\/span>Alexandros Tziolis<\/strong> on board, they travelled to South America. <\/span>\u039aatsouranis<\/strong><\/span> and <\/span>Salpingidis<\/strong><\/span> played in the opening day defeat by <\/span>Colombia<\/strong><\/span> (3-0). The former started in the goalless draw against Japan, but was sent off in the 28th minute on a second bookable offence. <\/span>Salpingidis<\/strong><\/span> came off the bench. On the last matchday of the group stage, <\/span>Salpingidis<\/strong><\/span> features in the starting line-up, while <\/span>Glykos<\/b><\/a><\/span> is introduced in the game in the 24th minute, as <\/span>Karnezis<\/strong> got injured. Greece defeated the Ivory Coast (2-1) and qualified to the last 16 stage.<\/p>\n\"\"<\/a>\n

They came up against <\/span>Costa Rica<\/strong>. <\/span>Salpingidis<\/strong><\/span> is in the initial line-up and gets substituted after 69 minutes of play. <\/span>Katsouranis<\/strong><\/span> comes off the bench in the 78th minute. The <\/span>Costaricans<\/strong> take the lead, but <\/span>Papastathopoulos<\/strong><\/span> nets the equalizer at stoppage time and leads the encounter to extra time. The match remained undecided and the two sides headed for the penalty shoot-out. <\/span>Keylor Navas<\/strong><\/span> denied <\/span>Fanis Gekas<\/strong><\/span> from the spot and Greece got eliminated.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, <\/span>Cameroon<\/strong><\/span> were dealt a tough draw, in a group against <\/span>Brazil<\/strong>, <\/span>Croatia<\/strong><\/span> and <\/span>\u039cexico<\/strong>. They lost all three group matches, with <\/span>Charles Itandje<\/strong><\/span> as starting goalkeeper. The \u201cDouble-Headed Eagle\u2019s\u201d keeper got to pay for his team\u2019s weaknesses and ended up conceding 9 goals: one to Mexico and four each to Brazil and Croatia. <\/p>\n\"\"<\/a>\n

Ricardo Costa<\/strong> and Christian Noboa<\/strong> belong in a different category. They participated in the 2014 World Cup with Portugal<\/strong> and Ecuador<\/strong> respectively, but would join PAOK six months later, in January 2015.<\/p>\n

Amr Warda<\/strong> and Aleksandar Prijovi\u0107<\/strong> are about to make their dream come true and participate in the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
