{"id":552669,"date":"2019-11-26T12:11:11","date_gmt":"2019-11-26T10:11:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.paokfc.gr\/uncategorized-en\/20191126-xronia-polla-fernando\/"},"modified":"2019-11-26T15:15:36","modified_gmt":"2019-11-26T13:15:36","slug":"20191126-xronia-polla-fernando","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.paokfc.gr\/en\/news\/20191126-xronia-polla-fernando\/","title":{"rendered":"Happy Birthday Fernando!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Fernando Lopes Do Santos Varela<\/strong> was born in <strong>Cascais<\/strong>, <strong>Portugal<\/strong>, a town near <strong>Lisbon<\/strong>, on November 26, 1987. He began his career at <strong>Estoril, <\/strong>where he remained for two years, and also spent time out on loan at <strong>Rio Maior<\/strong> to cut his proverbial footballing teeth.<\/p>\n<p>In January 2009 he agreed a deal to join <strong>Trofense<\/strong>. There, he had the opportunity to play in the Portuguese top flight for the first time, but the club was relegated. He stayed for one more season, playing in second tier an helping the club win promotion.<\/p>\n<p>In the summer of 2011, <strong>Feirense<\/strong> acquired his services with the club returning to the country&#8217;s top divisions after a 22-year absence. <strong>Varela<\/strong> was one of the club&#8217;s top players, but the team failed to avoid relegation. It was then that he made the decision to go abroad.<\/p>\n<p>On May 29, 2012, he penned a three-year contract to join <strong>Vaslui<\/strong> in <strong>Romania<\/strong>. They could only hold on to him for one season, however, as soon <strong>Steaua Bucharest<\/strong> came knocking at the door and signed him.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Varela<\/strong> lead the famous <strong>Romanian<\/strong> club&#8217;s backline for three seasons, wearing the captain&#8217;s armband. He won two league titles, a Romanian Cup, and a domestic League Cup before departing for Thessaloniki to join <strong>PAOK<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Dikefalos tou Vorra&#8217;s<\/strong> center-back decided at a young age to represent <strong>Cape Verde <\/strong>at international level, and during his career with the national team, <strong>Varela<\/strong> made 45 appearances and scored three goals, even wearing the captain&#8217;s armband before retiring a few months ago.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Beast, <\/strong>as he is known at PAOK, is in his fourth season at the club, having played 129 matches and scoring six goals, while also contributing five assists.
