The city that is &laquo;ever growing, never aging&raquo;, is a quiet Balkan capital that tries to look timidly towards the west. It moves at a leisurely pace and at the same time is full of the vibrancy of the students of its numerous universities. It is known for some historical sightseeing and a low-budget trip right on our doorstep.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sofia<\/strong> is one of the oldest cities in Europe, a place where humans first settled since at least 7,000 BC, hence the motto &laquo;ever growing, never aging&raquo;. It is dotted with imposing churches, Christian domes, Ottoman mosques and Red Army monuments.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Walk along Vitosha Avenue, the pedestrianized part of the city, and enjoy the dozens of shops and all day caf\u00e9s lined up on the cobblestones.<\/li>\n<li>Enjoy a walk in the Sofia Cultural Center Park, which stretches across the southern part of the center and is a huge oasis with fountains, beautiful flowers and an imposing Cultural Center and outdoor caf\u00e9.<\/li>\n<li>Do not miss the Sredets district, south of the Cathedral, with its narrow streets famous for their student life and modern or retro micro-shops on every corner.<\/li>\n<li>Enjoy the numerous exceptional options for food and drinks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Nevsky Cathedral<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.paokfc.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/sofia_odigos_inblog_1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-695920 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.paokfc.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/sofia_odigos_inblog_1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"470\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.paokfc.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/sofia_odigos_inblog_1.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.paokfc.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/sofia_odigos_inblog_1-300x201.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.paokfc.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/sofia_odigos_inblog_1-429x288.jpg 429w, https:\/\/www.paokfc.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/sofia_odigos_inblog_1-130x87.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.paokfc.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/sofia_odigos_inblog_1-266x179.jpg 266w, https:\/\/www.paokfc.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/sofia_odigos_inblog_1-696x467.jpg 696w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a>\n<p>A symbolic temple for the whole of <strong>Bulgaria<\/strong>, it was built at the end of the 19th century in memory of the 200,000 Russian soldiers who were killed fighting for <strong>Bulgarian<\/strong> independence against the Ottomans. The church can be visited and&#8230; it houses 1,500 year old tombs!<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>The Ancient City of Serdica<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.paokfc.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/sofia_odigos_inblog_2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-695917 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.paokfc.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/sofia_odigos_inblog_2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"470\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.paokfc.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/sofia_odigos_inblog_2.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.paokfc.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/sofia_odigos_inblog_2-300x201.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.paokfc.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/sofia_odigos_inblog_2-429x288.jpg 429w, https:\/\/www.paokfc.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/sofia_odigos_inblog_2-130x87.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.paokfc.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/sofia_odigos_inblog_2-266x179.jpg 266w, https:\/\/www.paokfc.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/sofia_odigos_inblog_2-696x467.jpg 696w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a>\n<p>Below the metro station of the same name in the center, there is a complex of archaeological findings, with eight streets and the ruins of royal temples, baths and residences of the 4th century, when the city named <strong>Serdica<\/strong> existed here.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>The Archaeological Museum<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Housed in a 15th-century mosque, it contains treasures found in Thracian lands, as well as finds from Roman and medieval times, from elaborate mosaics to burial masks and sculptures.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>The History Museum of Sofia and the National History Museum<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>One is housed on the two floors of old Ottoman baths, the other in the former presidential palace of the communist period. Very close to the National History Museum (and with teh same ticket), is the <strong>Boyana Temple<\/strong>, included in the <strong>UNESCO World Heritage List<\/strong>\u00a0thanks to its 90 frescoes, some of the most characteristic examples of medieval <strong>Bulgarian<\/strong> art.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Mount Vitosha<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.paokfc.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/sofia_odigos_inblog_5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-695908 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.paokfc.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/sofia_odigos_inblog_5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"470\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.paokfc.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/sofia_odigos_inblog_5.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.paokfc.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/sofia_odigos_inblog_5-300x201.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.paokfc.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/sofia_odigos_inblog_5-429x288.jpg 429w, https:\/\/www.paokfc.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/sofia_odigos_inblog_5-130x87.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.paokfc.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/sofia_odigos_inblog_5-266x179.jpg 266w, https:\/\/www.paokfc.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/sofia_odigos_inblog_5-696x467.jpg 696w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a>\n<p>Vitosha Mountain National Forest is a green oasis a stone&#8217;s throw from the capital.
