{"id":844926,"date":"2025-01-23T14:34:10","date_gmt":"2025-01-23T12:34:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.paokfc.gr\/uncategorized-en\/20250123-i-empeiri-slavia-pragas-stin-toumba\/"},"modified":"2025-01-23T17:22:48","modified_gmt":"2025-01-23T15:22:48","slug":"20250123-i-empeiri-slavia-pragas-stin-toumba","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.paokfc.gr\/en\/news\/20250123-i-empeiri-slavia-pragas-stin-toumba\/","title":{"rendered":"The experienced Slavia Plague visit the Toumba"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Although very experienced in <strong>European<\/strong> competitions, the <strong>Toumba Stadium&#8217;s<\/strong> next visiting team are is in 29th place with just four points, compared to the seven points won by <strong>PAOK<\/strong>, who are in 23rd place.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>This is the second time that <strong>PAOK<\/strong> will meet <strong>Slavia<\/strong>. On <strong>28.11.2002,<\/strong> the home side won 1-0 at the <strong>Toumba<\/strong> (<strong>Giorgos Georgiadis <\/strong>was the scorer) in the 3rd round of the <strong>UEFA Cup. <\/strong>However, in the second leg in <strong>Prague (12.12.2002)<\/strong> <strong>PAOK<\/strong> were defeated 4-0 and said goodbye to the qualifying for the &laquo;Round of 32&raquo;.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Slavia<\/strong> have won 21 championships (13 Czechoslovakian and eight as the Czech Republic, 11 Czech Cups and the Mitropa Cup in 1938. They have reached the semi-finals of the 1995\u201396 <strong>UEFA Cup<\/strong> and qualified for the group stage of the <strong>Champions League<\/strong> for the first time in their history in the 2007\u201308 season.<\/li>\n<li>In 2019, they reached the quarter-finals of the 2018\u201319 <strong>Europa League<\/strong> and also qualified for the group stage of the <strong>2019\u201320 Champions League<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Slavia<\/strong> played in the quarter-finals of the <strong>Europa League<\/strong> in the 2020\u201321 season, when they also won the <strong>Czech<\/strong> championship with an impressive 54-game unbeaten run.<\/li>\n<li>The club was founded on <strong>02.11.1892<\/strong> by medical students, as a sports club with the aim of increasing sports activity among students. The club initially focused on cycling and then expanded into football in <strong>1896.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>In 1905, <strong>Scottish<\/strong> manager and former <strong>Celtic<\/strong> player <strong>Johnny Madden<\/strong> brought new tactics and views on football to the club from his homeland. He managed to establish an early golden era for the club that lasted 25 years. Under <strong>Madden, Slavia<\/strong> won 134 domestic matches out of a total of 169, and 304 European matches out of 429 between 1905 and 1930. In 1930, <strong>Madden<\/strong> retired from <strong>Slavia<\/strong> and professional football at the age of 66, although he remained in <strong>Prague<\/strong> for the rest of his life.<\/li>\n<li>In the <strong>1934 World Cup<\/strong>, the <strong>Czechoslovakia<\/strong> national team had eight <strong>Slavia<\/strong> players in the squad.<\/li>\n<li>The second golden period came when <strong>Slavia<\/strong> brought <strong>Josef Bi\u0161an<\/strong> from <strong>Admira Vienna. Slavia<\/strong> won titles in 1940, 1941, 1942 and 1943 with <strong>Bi\u0161an.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>On the other hand, the 1950s and 1960s were not as good when <strong>Slavia<\/strong> was relegated twice, in 1961 and 1963.<\/li>\n<li>In 1996 <strong>Slavia<\/strong> won their 14th title after 49 years. During that season, <strong>Slavia<\/strong> also played in the semi-finals of the <strong>UEFA Cup,<\/strong> while four players of the team played a key role in winning second place at <strong>EURO &#8217;96<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>In October 2006, construction began on the new and long-awaited stadium in <strong>Eden (Eden Stadium<\/strong> or <strong>Synot Tip Arena<\/strong>) for <strong>21,000<\/strong> spectators. The stadium opened on <strong>7 May 2008.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>In the autumn of 2010, the club found itself in crisis due to financial problems. After several changes in its ownership, <strong>Slavia<\/strong> was bought in December 2023 by <strong>Czech<\/strong> businessman <strong>Pavel Tyka\u010d,<\/strong> who bought the club from <strong>Chinese<\/strong> owners for 2 billion <strong>Czech<\/strong> crowns.<\/li>\n<li>The club&#8217;s colors, red and white, were chosen as representative of heart and blood&#8230;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Slavia&#8217;s<\/strong> biggest rival is <strong>Sparta Prague<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Often, <strong>Sparta Prague<\/strong> fans in particular, see <strong>Slavia<\/strong> as a <strong>Jewish<\/strong> club, even though the club was neither founded by <strong>Jews<\/strong> nor has any <strong>Jewish<\/strong> history.
