When Mak went crazy…

Most players choose to leave Greece in order to improve, but he left Bundesliga to join the Greek Super League and to enjoy football gain. The oxymoron is that he made it! By coming to PAOK, Róbert Mak turned his life and his career around.

12.04.2016

After the Greek Cup semi-final against Olympiacos and before Euro 2016 kicks off, the Slovakian MVP of the “Double-Headed Eagle” conceded a long and revealing interview to Toumba Magazine. Róbert Mak didn’t shy away from the questions and tackled all issues: last season’s breakdown, injuries, his future, Igor Tudor, Greek football, PAOK’s moves, Vladan Ivić, Olympiacos…

On his trajectory at PAOK

“I joined PAOK to change my career, because I wasn’t getting the opportunities I wanted in Germany. I was disillusioned and I wanted to make something of my life. These 18 months at PAOK are the best of my life. As you said, many things happened. I lined up many appearances, I created my own family and I am very happy to be here. I felt like home from the very beginning and still do. It’s very nice to be a part of this club. This season is probably the best of my career, both with PAOK and the national team. PAOK helped me become a regular in the Slovakia team. PAOK have given me everything”.

On his weirdest experience in Greek football

“The semi-final against Olympiacos. In football everything is 50-50. In Greece however, when you face Olympiacos, you are at 20-80! After everything I have experienced here, that was the icing on the cake. I went mad and now I want to forget about it. I was very happy with my goal and experiencing packed Toumba. I hope that there will be a change and Greek football will be freed from people who don’t deserve to be in it”.

On whether he wants to leave Greece, as he said after the Greek Cup semi-final:

“At that moment, we were all very disappointed. It was the most outrageous moment of my life. I am 25 years old and have been in football for 18 years now. I have never felt like this. Saying that I don’t want to be part of that football was in the heat of the moment. It was a sentimental reaction – I burst out, because I was looking forward to that game, to playing and to a fair competition. Not like this. However time heals everything. What happened is still on my mind, but I can’t change it. It was a spur of the moment thing”.
