«We always aim to win»

Fernando Varela shared his thoughts with paokfc.gr on the upcoming encounter against Panionios in Nea Smyrni. Here is what the Cape Verde player said about the loss to Qarabağ FK, his own performance and the upcoming clash in Nea Smyrni.

On the encounter against Qarabağ FK:

«The match against Qarabağ FK was tough. We couldn’t make the most of the chances we created, as opposed to our rivals who managed to score. However, we mustn’t give up. We must fight until the end. But we are very sad for suffering a home defeat «.

On whether all hope is lost for qualification:

«We must never give up. It’s our duty to fight in all matches, we must make an effort to defeat ACF Fiorentina and FC Slovan Liberec, hoping that these results can take us to the next round. We didn’t get any points from the two encounters against Qarabağ FK. But that doesn’t spell the end. We can cover that distance in the last two matchdays. We need to keep our heads high and recover our self-confidence«.

On the intense criticism by fans:

«Criticism can improve a player or a team. When we lose, it’s normal not to be applauded by fans, since they are disappointed. It’s up to us to reverse this situation by improving our performances. After a home loss to Qarabağ FK, which isn’t considered a big club, then it’s normal for the fans to be disappointed. We are also sad. Therefore we must keep on working hard and remain united«.

On his own performances since he joined PAOK:

«I am still adjusting. The team have quality players and can claim the league title. However we need to be more self-confident. We have a good team and, if we remain united and focused, we can win the title. It won’t be easy. Olympiacos and Panathinaikos are tough opponents, but if we believe in ourselves we can be champions«.
On the encounter against Panionios:

«Panionios are very tough to beat at home, they play good football and we will analyze them on video, to pinpoint their virtues and weak points. As always, we are aiming for the three-pointer, knowing how tricky the match will be«.
