PAOK vs. Larissa: Facts & Figures
Ahead of PAOK’s Greek Cup Round of 16 second-leg clash against Larissa, paokfc.gr puts you in the picture about the background to the game, as well as a look back at our previous encounters against the Vissini.
- This is the first time that the two teams are facing each other for the second consecutive year in the Greek Cup. Last season they again met at the same Round of 16 stage, with PAOK securing two victories.
- This is the fifth time overall that the two teams are facing each other in the cup, with PAOK having progressed every team apart from once, when they were beaten by Larissa in the 1985 final, a feat which saw the Thessaly club deny PAOK a historic double. That match was also the first time the two teams met in the competitkon, while the other three times were in 1990-91, 2003-04 and the 2016-17 seasons.
- In the 2020-21 season, in the first game that took place at the Toumba, PAOK prevailed 5-0 thanks to a hat-trick by Tzolis (9′, 23′, 74′), and further strikes from Krmencik (47′), and Ingason (55′). In the second leg in Larissa, which took place on February 3, 2021, PAOK won again via a 2-1 (39′ Pereira own goal – 19′ Tsingaras, 29 Krmencik) scoreline.
- The 2016-17 meeting was the first time that PAOK faced Larissa in the competition in the group stage format. The match was a one-legged tie and took place at the Toumba, with the Double-headed Eagle prevailing 2-0 (28′ Mystakidis, 41′ Pereira).
- Their next meeting was on March 10, 1991 at the Toumba in the quarter-finals. PAOK prevailed 3-0 (41′ Lagonidis, 78′ Borbokis, 83′ Karageorgiou) and laid the foundations for qualification for the next phase. The 2-0 defeat in Larissa in the second leg was not an anxious one for PAOK, since the score until added time was just 1-0 thanks to Petkov’s goal (25′) and then just before the final whistle, Da Silva sent the ball into the net for the second time.
- In the 2003-04 season the two teams met quite early on in the first round of the competition which at that time was with direct knockout matches and not in a group as it is now. Larissa got a 1-1 draw (10′ Giasemakis – 42′ Tsakmakidis) at an empty Toumba due to a punishment for earlier crowd troubles. PAOK managed to clinch the tie in the second leg, however, winning 3-0 (14′ Hagan, 41′ Spasic, 86′ Giasemakis) to comfortably qualify for the second round.
- In their matches in the Greek Cup there have only been two draws and both were with a score of 1-1. The first was in 2003-04 and the last in this year’s first-leg match between the two teams.
- In the last 16 games between the two teams in all competitions, PAOK has 12 wins and four draws, with the last victory for Larissa coming on March 28, 2010 via a 2-1 scoreline in added time with a goal by Puri, while the 1 -1 draw featured goals from Cousin (16′) and Contreras (83′).
