A defeat out of nowhere at the Toumba

Aris managed to convert their one and only big opportunity at the Toumba, while PAOK missed several of theirs and as a result slipped to a damaging 1-0 defeat in this Matchday 8 Super League Interwetten Play Offs clash.

In terms of changes, Razvan Lucescu fielded Ingason, Akpom and A. Zivkovic in the starting lineup compared to the previous game against PAS Giannina, and PAOK began brightly as they tried to take an early lead. However, Tsingaras’s shot in the 5th minute was cleared off the line by the Aris defence.

The visitors then took control of possession in the first 15 minutes, without however managing to create any significant opportunities, before the home side managed to wrest control of the ball for the rest of the first half, albeit without being able to become particularly threatening.

PAOK did have a shot on target through Kurtic, who saw his effort saved by Cuesta, while Aris had two attempts off target, while there were some tough duels going on all over the pitch and some tough tackling meaning the game was continuously interupted and the home side could not find any real rhythm to their play.

The two coaches did not change anything during the half-time break, with PAOK starting the second half stronger and missed a golden chance to take the lead in the 51st minute. Kurtic played Sastre into a good shooting position, but Cuesta saved the Spanish full-back’s effort, and the arriving Murg failed to score from the rebound with the goal gaping.

PAOK showed a desire to pin Aris back in their own half, but against the run of play, the visitors managed to take the lead with a goal by Kamara in the 63rd minute.

Razvan Lucescu’s men tried to push for a draw, but Aris defended en masse and the 0-1 scoreline did not change with the home side suffering a disappointing defeat.

Team lineups:

PAOK: Paschalakis, Sastre, Ingason, Mihaj (Colak 80′), Sidcley, Tsingaras (Soares 66′), Kurtic, Taylor (Mitrita 66′), A. Zivkovic, Murg (Schwab 66′), Akpom.

Aris: Cuesta, Sundgren, Fabiano, Brabec, M’Bakata (Sakic 69 ‘), Dukoure, Matilla, Iturbe (Delizisis 84′), Mancini (Mateo 79′), Kamara, Bertoglio (Palma 79’).
