Panathinaikos vs. PAOK: Facts & Figures
Just a few hours ahead of the second leg of PAOK’s Greek Cup quarter-final tie against Panathinaikos, paokfc.gr puts you in the picture about the background to the match at the “Apostolos Nikolaidis”, as well as a look back at our previous encounters against the Greens.
- The last time that the two teams met at a stage before the final was in 2019-20, when the Double-headed Eagle won both matches, 2-0
- (34’ Vieirinha , 72’ Varela) at the Toumba and 1-0 at «Leoforos» (11’ Swiderski).
- This is the sixth time that the two clubs happen to meet back-to-back in two different competitions and so far they have had one win each. The only exception is the 1993-94 season, when PAOK won the league match 3-1 on December 11, 1993 and drew 0-0 at the Olympic Stadium on December 15, 1993.
- They have played matches against each other in less than four days also in 2006-07 with Panathinaikos winning 3-1 in extra time on January 31, 2006 in the Greek Cup and PAOK winning the league match 2-1 on February 3, 2006.
- In 2016-17 PAOK won 3-0 in the league on April 9, 2017 and Panathinaikos won 2-0 in the Greek Cup on April 12, 2017. In 2019-20, Panathinaikos won 2-0 in the league on February 2, 2020 and PAOK won the cup match 2-0 on February 5, 2020.
- Their games in 2021-22 were also consecutive, after PAOK prevailed 2-0 in the Play Offs on May 17, 2022, and a few days later on May 21, 2022, it was then the Greek Cup final between them in the competition where Panathinaikos lifted the trophy with Aitor’s penalty.
- Their matches in two-legged ties in the last eight are limited, since this is only the third time they meet at this stage. They were paired at this stage in 2019-20 and also in 2006-07, where Panathinaikos qualified after extra-time of the second leg match that took place at OAKA with a 3-1 scoreline. PAOK won 2-1 at the Toumba (31′ Konstantinidis , 42′ Mieciel – 62′ Mantzios).
- Six of their 12 matches have been in the semi-final phase of the competition, with the two teams having three qualifications each. In 2016-17 PAOK were defeated 2-0 in the first match at «Leoforos», but an impressive 4-0 win at the Toumba saw PAOK qualify for the final, where they won the trophy with a 2-1 victory over of AEK.
- Before the introduction of two legs in the Greek Cup, they have met in the quarter-finals three more times, with all matches taking place in Thessaloniki, and PAOK qualifying in 1970-71 and 1972-73.
- Panathinaikos qualified in 1967-68 with the match being decided in extra-time. In total, in single or two-legged ties in the quarter-final stage, PAOK have qualified three times, and Panathinaikos twice.
