«Every match depends on team work»
Ricardo Costa spoke on Novasports TV for the game against AEK Athens in Toumba and elaborated on the team’s condition, his personal performances and the points that may prove key and decide Wednesday’s encounter. Here is what the Portuguese defender said:
On the team’s condition after the Baku game:
«We are feeling well despite not winning. A point earned in the first group stage match of the UEFA Europa League is not a bad thing. We are working hard and preparing for our next encounter«.
On the fact that PAOK defenders stood out with their performance against Qäbälä FC:
«Defence is part of the team. We had some really good opportunities to score, especially in the first half. Had we achieved it, it would be a whole different game. When in a 0-0 deadlock, game transitions can be decisive. One team might enjoy possession, but if they lose the ball, a fast break can undo them. The whole team has to pitch in –the goalkeeper, the defender or the forward. Every match depends on team work«.
On his personal performance and his improvement:
«Everything relates to hard work. I believe in our effort and in our tactics. It all contributes to improvement. I have self-confidence and it is transmitted by the coach. If a coach believes in you, then you believe in yourself. That goes for all guys. Pelkas, Tzavellas, Vítor, Olsen, they are all in great condition. They all enjoy the trust of the coach, they feel comfortable on the pitch and render better from game to game. The team is important. I believe that PAOK are a high-level club and players should handle pressure and play for the team«.
On AEK Athens:
«I know some of their players and the system they apply. I would rather talk about us though and what we have to do in order to win«.
His opinion about AEK:
«They are a good team, have pacy players who excel in the transition game. However it’s up to us. We need to start strongly and get command of the encounter right from the start. In such matches, first minutes are crucial. It’s a battle. We need to keep the ball, apply pressure in their box and eliminate counterattacking situations at our expense. We have a tough encounter ahead of us, but we are in a good shape and I am feeling confident about our chances«.
