Frank Arnesen in the mixed zone of Toumba
After PAOK’s mediocre result against Panthrakikos, Frank Arnesen went to Toumba’s mixed zone and answered the questions posed by media representatives, regarding the present and future of the team. Here is what the Sports Director of the “Double-Headed Eagle” had to say.
His initial comment:
«My presence here shouldn’t be surprising. Of course, the coach and players represent the club after their matches. In difficult situations though, after dropping two points against league minnows, maybe it’s time for me to represent the club. That is all. I have nothing more to say to you that what I already stated in the summer. We are midway through a new project and it’s only natural for ups and downs to occur. What we must do is record victories when we are “up” and learn our lessons when we are “down”. I won’t address any sporting issues –that is our coach’s job. We have achieved many things and recorded big victories since 16 July, when we started our work. I know very well that the work accomplished at the team is of high quality. When in the process of building something, one shouldn’t expect the team to be always on the ascendancy. We are here to explain to the players and to the coach the process of maturing».
On the numerous changes made since the Asteras match:
«It’s a normal procedure. The coach is trying to field the best possible squad according to the rival. After this 3-3 result, we understand that this plan doesn’t always work. That is why we have a roster of 20-25 good players and that is why our coach needs to give playing time to various players».
On the club standing by the coach:
«In my press conference, I had been asked whether he will be here in March. Of course he will be here in March. In our current procedure, ups and downs are natural. Of course we stand by our coach, like our fans are doing in their own fantastic way».
On when he would be able to decipher if the team building process isn’t going well:
«I want to underline that, with so many newcomers in the team, with a new coach and new philosophy implemented, every situation needs different handling. Let me bring the example of Charisis, who has parted from his family and his home for the first time in his career and needs to assume responsibility. No team on a building process can avoid 2-3 setbacks. It’s important to come out stronger from this procedure. That is a gamble that needs the players to stick together. We are a big club and we can’t pretend these are not negative results. I am optimistic that we will come out clear».
On whether this crisis is being handled correctly:
«It’s a crucial week with three back-to-back bad results. However it’s not the end of the world. Nor me or the coach will we use excuses such as the injuries. Being honest and making some necessary changes is all it takes».
On the transfer window of January:
«It’s the worst moment to be talking about transfer issues. Right now the players on our roster need our attention, as they have the required quality to play here. Some of them were not in form today, but that doesn’t negate their quality and ability to help us».
On Kakos and Chalkias:
«At a big club such as PAOK, we work non-stop to staff our sections in the best possible way. We keep our eyes open and make necessary moves in order to support the team with everything they need».
