«I know well what needs to be done»

Ahead of the encounter against Asteras Tripolis, Igor Tudor talked about everything concerning himself and his players lately, while also analyzing his plans for Saturday. Here is what the Croatian coach said:

26.02.2016

On the best aspects of his team in the match against Panathinaikos:

«Everything is important in football, from the first to the last aspect. I can’t find something of less importance. We need to pay attention to every single detail. In the previous match, my team showed a different image compared to their matches before that –I liked it. We became more attack-minded. We need to keep on that track, work on all details of our game and add new elements. In order to be more attacking, we don’t just have to keep possession or play a tiki-taka game, but we need to become dangerous. I am satisfied with my players’s work in that aspect«.

On the team’s attacking side:

«Bringing out the necessary energy depends on the style of the players. If applied correctly, it’s a tool worth displaying against your rivals. However when a team doesn’t have the right type of players for it, you can’t do it. We have several young players with lots of runs and energy. We can apply it, work on it and improve it during the season«.

On whether the team gets affected by negative results:

«There are some things a coach can say in public and others that are destined only for the ears of the administration. I want to protect the team –and by team, I mean first of all the players, and then myself and my assistants. I don’t underestimate the fans’ criteria. Thessaloniki fans know football, know the club and its mentality. That is very important. There will always be people with a different opinion, but the majority understands that and I totally understand them. I understand that for some this might seem negative, but we need to focus on the positive side. These situations can improve a team. We need to see it as a challenge both for the players and for me. When everything goes well, one can’t realize the progress they have made«.

On whether he is already thinking about the Olympiacos match:

«We are 100% focused on Asteras. The Greek Cup match is not on our minds now. We will field the best 11 players in our disposal«.

On Antonis and his plans for him:

«He will start against Asteras. Some choices might seem strange to an outsider who doesn’t understand the team’s day-to-day activity. I know very well what needs to be done in order to have the desired results. I have great faith in the team that will play against Asteras Tripolis on Saturday. Let me underline that all players have been given opportunities during the season to show their worth. Some made the most of these opportunities and some didn’t, but everyone got their chance«.

On the difficulties that the match against Asteras presents:

«I don’t feel it will be tougher compared to the one against Panathinaikos. We played one of our best first halves in Tripolis –and one of our worst second halves. We ended up losing, despite deserving a better result. I expect us to dominate our match on Saturday and be in control from minute one. I believe we are in form and we will prove that. Asteras are a strong side, one of our direct rivals in the play-offs and we need to win«.
