PAOK – Asteras Tripolis: Mixed zone
After the final whistle of the Toumba encounter against Asteras Tripolis, Mak, Mystakidis and Antonis spoke to media representatives in the mixed zone.
Róbert Mak spoke about the victory over Asteras Tripolis, the upcoming encounter against Olympiacos and acclaimed his coach:
«We have a tough schedule and are facing a great opponent on Wednesday for the Greek Cup. We need to rest and be ready for that game, to do everything we can to qualify. We knew that today’s match would be difficult, Asteras are a good team and a direct opponent in the standings. We needed this result after several winless weeks and now we focus on our game against Olympiacos«.
«In the last six months and due to our presence in Europe, Greek Cup and league, we have been playing every three days. Therefore, our main concern has been to recuperate as best as possible between matches. That is not so easy having two small children at home. But I am trying to help my team. Different competition, different football. In the Europa League, we faced teams who play attacking football and you don’t have the time to make up for errors. In Greece, many teams lack quality and defend in numbers in order to get some points. It’s tough to break through such defensive schemes. Europa League is over for us and we need to concentrate on our domestic duties. I am trying to score in every encounter. We need to focus on the league and the Greek Cup and qualify to the final«.
«We will see on Wednesday if we are more cut out for such encounters. We need a positive result at home in order to qualify. We want to finish the season with a trophy. It’s been a long time since PAOK were able to do that and everyone is focusing on us. We want to eliminate Olympiacos and we will try hard for it. Tudor is a very young coach. He helps us a lot, he is a very good coach willing to work hard. I hope he will stay on for many years and will titles for PAOK«.
«I have still two years on my contract with PAOK. I am focusing on the next encounter. I am fine here. Beautiful city, a club with great fans. Of course, when things don’t go well, the situation gets complicated. My only aim now is for us to win the Greek Cup. In football you never know what will happen, things can evolve very quickly. Our first concern in the Greek Cup, we want to qualify for the final. It’s imperative to do well in the play-offs and get a Champions League spot. But the Greek Cup comes first«.
Giannis Mystakidis, who earned the Vodafone MVP award for the encounter, spoke about the team’s improvement:
«In previous matches, we played good football but didn’t win. It’s important to get good results. We displayed passion, will and got an important win. We are all trying to find our footing. We have character and get through rough patches. We want our fans on our side and wish to thank those who attended the match today«.
«I thank my teammates. Our fans are the MVPs, the same goes for all the players and our coaching staff. We are all putting on an effort for our side and, when results are there, we are very happy. This team has passion. I believe we can win on Wednesday with our fans’ support. In previous matches we mainly lacked luck. We would concede goals with our rivals’ first chance. Today we kept our opponents at bay, proving we are a compact team. Since the beginning of the season, we knew we would play every three days and we had to come to terms with it«.
Terry Antonis, who featured in Toumba Stadium for the first time, said the following:
«I am happy for the victory and my participation. My parents woke up early in Australia to watch me play. I spoke with them and they were very happy. I am also happy that our team got the three-pointer. I have still a lot to give, but these three points are of the essence. We have a huge game coming up against a very tough rival. That provides extra motivation. We need to be strong from minute one and show that we can claim that match as well«.
