«We must play our game»
Markos Vellidis spoke to Novasports TV about the encounter against Levadiakos. Here is what PAOK goalkeeper said about the match, the team’s situation, the Nea Smyrni defeat and how off-pitch developments affect players:
On his presence at PAOK so far and on the Sunday match:
«I wanted to join PAOK very much and I worked hard for it. I am very happy to be here, especially as it’s the 90th anniversary of the club. I believe we will be good on Sunday, we will win and leave our unfortunate Nea Smyrni result behind us. We all focus on that«.
On what the Panionios match taught them:
«We lost a match that was practically ours. We had more ball possession, but we failed to display focus and cleverness at some points. We gave our rivals the opportunity to make the most of our errors. We should focus on making less mistakes and win such matches«.
On recurrent errors and on how it is possible to regain optimism:
«First and foremost, we need to keep healthy as we have suffered too many injuries this season and the team couldn’t be as competitive as they could because of it. With almost 35 muscular injuries, the problem is obvious. It’s the collective performance that makes the difference in defence and attack. We all need to be there for our teammates in order to make fewer mistakes. It would be wrong to point out personal errors. But, as long as we help each other on the pitch, I am confident we will eliminate them«.
On the absence of the fans and on Levadiakos:
«Playing without our fans is something we don’t want of course –no team wants that. Players can’t perform as they want to in front of empty stands. We would like our fans on our side, but that’s impossible now. Regarding our rivals, they are a tough side, with very good players. But I believe we should only focus on our team, play our game, avoid errors and record an important victory«.
On PAOK’s ban and whether it affects the team:
«Of course we think about it. I believe that the ban was excessive in terms of points deducted, fine imposed and number of matches behind closed doors. I hope that the ban will be reduced, because it’s disproportionate. We are affected by the situation both as players and as members of the club«.
