«Our lack of finishing hurts us»

Here is what Vladan Ivić said in this press conference, right after the final whistle of the encounter between Panionios and PAOK for Super League matchday 10.

06.11.2016

On the encounter:

«After the initial five minutes and for the first half hour of the game, we had several problems in our defensive function. We tried to defend high up the pitch once or twice. That wasn’t my instruction, since it’s the wrong tactics when our rival has so fast players upfront. I guess that was our way of avoiding other problems. In the play that led to their goal, there is a player coming from behind, all three are marking one player and in fact we lose two players. Being so high up the pitch when the opponents are so fast spells non-stop danger. Afterwards we had two shots on woodwork and 3-4 good opportunities to score. The same scenario as last Thursday. Panionios had two shots on goal and converted one of them. We had chances to score, two shots on crossbar and I don’t know what to say. Apparently we are not lucky in our finishing«.

On the team’s below-par performances lately:

«I cannot complain of my team’s performance today in the second half, because the players put on an effort, fought until the last minute to equalize. Had we scored in the 50th or 55th minute, we could have turned the game around. If you are asking whether our rivals know our game, let me tell you that they also do their homework and analyze our strong and weak points as we do. We are trying out several players in attack, as we did today. Our lack of finishing was and is hurting us. Too many lost points«.

On the team’s failure to score more:

«If I said that this wasn’t our No 1 problem, I would be lying. If we check the ratio of chances created and missed, I believe we top the charts –not only in Greece. We lost many opportunities today as well. We need to pick ourselves up. That’s football. Things can improve only through hard work. It’s too soon to be talking about transfers. We have still three months until January and I can’t say something now. We need to improve through our existing roster. We must boost our players psychologically. We work a lot on our finishing. It’s all about having self-confident strikers«.

On whether he detects problems in the way that his team react after falling behind in a game:

«Today we were trailing since the 14th minute. In the second half, all the players made a huge effort, they asked for the ball, they didn’t hide, they wanted to turn the match around. On Thursday we experienced more problems after conceding. We lacked the player who would take command in attack. Today we fought, but couldn’t be successful and that hurts us«.

On whether this negative streak of results could affect the team’s morale:

«We have fallen behind in the standings, I agree – we also started the season with a point deduction. But there is a long way ahead. In football, both disappointment and joy last for 1-2 days, they are short-lived. I want to convey that to the players. One can’t be good and then relax, thinking that they already achieved something. The club provides us everything we want and need and we must respect that and keep the team at a high level«.
