«We always play to win»

Read on paokfc.gr what Željko Brkić said to Novasports TV, ahead of the encounter against Panathinaikos for matchday 28 of the Super League.

08.04.2017

On the fact that PAOK left it late in the season to get their first win in Athens, last Wednesday in Peristeri:

«This match was different. We started strongly and managed to score with just two minutes on the clock. That is the biggest difference compared to other games in Athens. For instance, we conceded in the first minute against AEK Athens and things got complicated right away. The Peristeri match was a special occasion, but I believe it can serve as a guide for matches to come –that we can attack from minute one in our away games«.

On whether the Peristeri victory brought more than the three-pointer to the team:

«As I said earlier, it should serve as guide on how to approach league and cup games. It’s very tough to play back-to-back matches every three days. It’s also difficult to keep in form in all games, but we can take heart from our performance in Peristeri, we can play in an attacking and disciplined manner –something we lacked in previous encounters«.

On his return to action:

«I am a professional and I always hope I can be in the initial line-up. When my coach told me I would start, I was ready. I have played two games, our team won and I didn’t concede. I am very happy about it«.

On how many consecutive games are necessary for a goalkeeper to reach top form:

«There isn’t a set rule. It’s entirely subjective. Every goalkeeper needs his own time. It’s tough not to play though, training isn’t the same as playing. However we are professionals, we need to get over such things and be ready«.

On the upcoming consecutive games against Panathinaikos:

«They will be totally different. As a rule, the most important game is the next game. We are only focusing on Sunday’s encounter and afterwards we will switch to Greek Cup mode«.

On Panathinaikos:

«They are a very good team, with fine players. They have been performing well lately, as their results show. It will be a difficult match for us, but we play at home and we want to win. It won’t be easy and we need to give it all we’ve got«.
