First reaction to the draw
Right after the draw of the UEFA Europa League 3rd qualifying round, that paired PAOK with FC Olimpik Donetsk, Aleksandar Stanojević and Yevhen Shakhov shared their thoughts regarding the first rival of our team.
The head coach of the “Double-Headed Eagle” spoke about FC Olimpik Donetsk, providing some info on them, declared himself confident of his team’s readiness and also referred to Rodrigo Rey, the latest signing to join the squad:
«The draw could have been worse, but we respect Ukrainian football as it features lots of good teams. However, in comparison with our rivals, we are more experienced in European competition and it’s only natural to be regarded as the tie favourites.
We know that Olimpik have a young coach who has been there in the last 3-4 seasons. They have changed their roster considerably and, by the time of our ties, they will already have played two league matches, so they will be more ready.
I usually prefer the first leg to be held at home. However, since it’s the beginning of the season and our first official match, maybe it’s better for us to start in Ukraine.
We will definitely be ready. We have friendly matches ahead and enough time at our disposal before the first leg. We will be ready.
We are very happy to welcome another goalkeeper in our ranks, a player of strong character. He was a captain and leader in his previous club. We needed a boost, as we were left only with our younger goalkeepers.”
Yevhen Shakhov is undoubtedly the most competent to speak about FC Olimpik Donetsk. The Ukrainian midfielder shared his thoughts on PAOK’s first rival in Europe, while also expressing his delight in the prospect of the trip to his homeland:
«They were very good last season, finishing fourth in the league. They have many new faces in their roster however and we don’t know their tactics and philosophy yet. Usually, Ukrainian sides play strongly and keep fighting until the last minute.
It’s tough to say if it’s a good draw or not. As far as we are concerned though, we need to play our game and get a good result away.
I am happy to return to my homeland of course. I have played numerous times in that venue and have many nice memories.”
