Paokfc.gr is here to put you in the mood just a few hours ahead of the Greek Cup semi-final first-leg clash against Olympiacos at the Toumba. Check out some interesting facts and figures related to the background of the game, as well as the previous history of matches between the two clubs.
- Since the establishment of two-legged ties in the Greek Cup, PAOK and Olympiacos have faced each other eight times. Both teams have claimed four qualifications. Only two of these two-legged ties that were played for the semi-finals of the institution, with PAOK qualifying in the 2013-14 season and Olympiacos in the 2019-20 season. There are also the semi-finals of 2015-16 where only the first match was held and PAOK boycotted the return leg at the «Georgios Karaiskakis».
- The two clubs met in the semi-finals in 1974-75, but that was a single knockout match that took place at the Karaiskakis, with Olympiacos prevailing 4-0.
- Their first match up over two legs was in the 1989-90 season in the Round of 16, with Olympiacos qualifying via a penalty shootout (5-3) after a 1-0 defeat at the Toumba and a 1-0 win at home.
- 10 – number of matches that have taken place with PAOK as the home team for the Greek Cup, from which the Double-headed Eagle has seven wins, one draw, and two defeats. One of the two losses was that on paper 3-0 in the 2015-16 season.
- 15 – number of the times the two sides have met before the final over two legs. Indeed, in 1931-32 when the competition first began until 1974-75, the draw had not brought them together and their only meetings during those years was in the final.
- Their first meeting before the final was in the 1974-75 season in the semis, but that was a single match at the Karaiskakis, where the Piraeus team prevailed 4-0 and booked their ticket for the final. This was the only time they were in the semi-finals of the competition when it was a single match format, and now in the last decade they count together with this year four ties. Those started with the 2013-14 season with PAOK qualifying from those semi-finals, and this was followed in 2019-20 when Olympiacos got the ticket for the final. Now the two clubs meet for the fourth time in two-legged ties in the semi-finals of the competition.
- There were also two ties in the Round of 16 (1975-76 and 1978-79), where PAOK lost both on penalties, with Olympiacos again progressing in a single- match knockout tie. PAOK qualified via a penalty shootout in 1989-90, over two legs that were in Round of 16.
- PAOK have a total of 5 qualifications in eight ties that the two teams have met over two legs. In 1989-90 things started with Olympiacos’ qualification in the Round of 16 phase via a penalty shootout, while in 1990-91 PAOK qualified in a Round of 32 tie. This was followed by Olympiacos’ qualification in the 1996-97 season in a Round of 16 tie. In 2002-03 PAOK qualified from the quarter-finals to the semis. The last qualification won by the Piraeus side was in the 2008-09 season, again in the quarter-finals, while the qualifications of PAOK from the quarter-finals (2010-11) and the semi-finals (2013-14) followed.
- The penultimate time that PAOK faced Olympiacos for the Greek Cup was in the 2015-16 season, again in the semi-finals, and after the events of the first game between the two teams at the Toumba, PAOK decided not to participate in the second leg of the semi-final at the Karaiskakis, and thus both games were recorded as 3-0 defeats for PAOK.
