Markos Vellidis’s journey towards Toumba
Training at Panathinaikos, first experiences at Rhodes, signing for Aris and establishing himself at PAS Giannina. This is the journey of Markos Vellidis before he came to PAOK.
Markos Vellidis was born on 4 April 1987 at Korissos Kastoria. At the age of 18, he signed his first professional contract with Panathinaikos, but didn’t get to play for their senior side. After some matches with the Greens’ U20 team, he was shipped on loan to Koropi in 2006-07 and made 17 appearances.
In the following season, he left Peania and played for Diagoras Rodos in the 2nd Division. In the summer of 2008, he was signed as a free agent from the Rhodes club and remained on the island until 2010 for a total of 55 matches.
He was ready for his next move and accepted the offer of Aris. After staying on the bench for a season as Μichalis Sifakis was No 1 at Charilaou, he became a starter and defended goal for two seasons, making some excellent performances.
He was released of his contract in June 2013 and PAS Giannina were the quickest to sign him. At the Ipiros club he established himself as one of Greece’s best goalkeepers. Through his overall excellent displays, he managed to make it to the national team. Sergio Markarián gave him his first cap on 16 June 2015, sending him on the pitch as substitute in the friendly encounter against Poland.
