September’s contest is a bit special. Even more so because despite the fact that it’s a competition of goals, none of the players involved in the top three are forwards. Two of the goals were scored by defenders, while the third is a midfielder. Also, one of the three players was involved in some way in all three of the shortlisted goals.
Leo Matos is first up. The Brazilian has already scored three goals so far this season but his strike against Atromitos is by far the best. El Loco received the ball from Misic and scored with a superb long-range strike in Peristeri.
In the same match, Atromitos managed to find the answer to PAOK’s two goals with two strikes of their own to make it 2-2. It seemed that the match would finish that way, but Jose Crespo had other ideas. In added time, Misic sent over a perfect free-kick for the Spanish defender to score with an impressive glancing header to give PAOK the three points.
Last but not least, there’s Josip Misic. The Croatian midfielder has already been nominated twice in previous months, but he’s in the hat this time as well. In September he notched up four assists, mainly as the role of playmaker, but the one goal he scored was simply outstanding. PAOK were trailing Aris 1-2 at the Toumba, but Misic had the final word in the last moments. Douglas picked him out with a pass, and Misic finished brilliantly to earn a 2-2 draw.
