Rival Analysis: Volos profile
Paokfc.gr’s Rival Analysis column puts the magnifying glass on this week’s opponents Volos, giving you the lowdown on everything you need to know about the Magnesia club ahead of our Super League Interwetten Matchday 16 contest.
Volos is undoubtedly one of the pleasant surprises of the championship. With the right work, great moves in the transfer market and a solid football plan, the club has managed to move into sixth place in the standings and is fighting for a place in the Play Offs.
After successive promotions of the previous years and last year’s comfortable season, the Magnesia club seem ready for the next step and the battle for a European place.
The summer, however, was not one of calm. Essentially, the team changed completely, while Sakis Tsiolis, who was initially selected to lead the team this season, departed before the championship even started.
He was replaced by Angel Lopez, a 37-year-old coach who, despite his young age, already had experience as a first-time coach. The Spaniard’s presence on the bench so far has been met with positivity during his first months in our country, as he is credited with the fact that the team has quickly found chemistry and plays great football against any opponent.
Volos are in sixth place in the league with 19 points, having scored 17 goals, while they have conceded 21.
Tassos Douvikas leads the scoring charts with five, while Barrientos has three, and Bartolio is first in the list of assists with three, with Ferrari and Martinez close behind with two apiece.
Volos have lost Amr Warda, while Eric Jedrisek, who did not get any playing time, also left, but the squad has been strengthened with the additions of Bueno, Renato Santos and Fausto Grillo, with the first two being players who have produced excellent performances in their careers so far in Spain and Portugal.
For the match at the Toumba, Lopez will be without the injured trio of Tekio, Tsokani and Bueno, as well as Bartolio and Colombo, who are both suspended.
