Battling PAOK fall short in Faliro
PAOK went to the Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium looking for the win, battled with all their might, taking plenty of risks, but in the the end they failed to leave with a positive result, as Olympiacos prevailed 4-2 on the fifth matchday of the 2024-25 Stoiximan Super League Play Offs.
The game started perfectly for the visitors. With only 47 seconds on the clock, Andrija Zivkovic took advantage of a mistake by Anagnostopoulos, stealing the ball before rounding him to score and make it 1-0.
PAOK then kept the ball, had control of the game, and missed a great opportunity in the sixth minute to score two more goals, with Konstantelias not finding the net from a good position. They were then made to pay for their profligacy by Olympiacos, as the home side managed to equalize with their first real attack. That came on 14 minutes, when El Kaabi passed to Velde, who was in space in the left side of the penalty area and fired in a powerful shot on goal. Kotarski got a hand to it, but he could not prevent it from going past him into the back of the net for 1-1.
Then, 16 minutes later, El Kaabi headed in a cross to make it 2-1 to the home side, but PAOK did not give up. Two minutes later, in the 32nd minute, Taison released A. Zivkovic and he twisted and turned before scoring his second goal with a low, diagonal shot into the bottom right corner to make it 2-2, which was how the first half ended.
PAOK came out strong in the second half and missed a huge opportunity to go in front for the second time in the game with Otto unable to beat Anagnostopoulos when clean through in a one-on-one situation, while Olympiacos responded with a header from Hezze which sailed wide.
The two teams made changes after that, with PAOK trying to press forward given the news from the other mtach that Panathinaikos had taken the lead against AEK. The Double-headed Eagle showed determination in trying to open up the home side and get a winning goal, but their forward forays cost them in the last 10 minutes as Olympiacos found spaces on the counter-attack and took a 4-2 with with late goals from Chiquinho and Gelson Martins.
PAOK remain in third place and will host AEK at the Toumba Stadium on the last matchday of the season to defend their two-point lead.
