Xanthi took the lead in the opening minutes of the encounter through two own-goals of the “Double-Headed Eagle”.

After surviving the initial shock, PAOK players reduced distances in the 27th minute, following an assist by Koutsias. The same player scored the equalizer afterwards, but the referee erroneously disallowed it on the offside rule. Xanthi also were awarded a penalty, but Tsioptsis saved their spot kick.
