Ahead of PAOK’s Greek Cup clash against Panathinaikos, paokfc.gr puts you in the picture about the background to the match, as well as a look back at our previous encounters against the Greens.
- 10 – the number of times PAOK has attempted to defend a 2-0 first-leg lead in the Greek Cup. And on nine of those occasionsτις the Dikefalos tou Vorra progressed to the next round. The first time it happened was in the 1982-83 season against Rhodes, when PAOK also won the second leg match. Then came a tie with Aris in the 1984-85 campaign when PAOK progressed thanks to an away goal in a 3-1 defeat.
- The 1988-89 season was the only time PAOK failed to progress when Panionios managed to win the second leg 2-0 and then go on to win the game in extra time with a third goal. After that, PAOK progressed in ties against Ionikos (1997-98), Xanthi (1997-98 and 2000-01), Olympiacos Volos (2002-03), Levadiakos (2012-13), Atromitos (2017-18) and Asteras Tripolis (2018-19).
- PAOK’s total return from those 10 ties after having a 2-0 first-leg win home win are: four wins, three draws and three defeats in the second leg matches.
- The last time the two teams faced each other was in the semi-finals and Panathinaikos had taken a 2-0 lead from the first leg in Athens. But PAOK prevailed thanks to an impressive 4-0 (14′ Pelkas , 49′ Leo Matos, 73′ Shakhov, 83′ Prijovic). PAOK went on to lift the trophy by defeating AEK 2-1 in the final.
- PAOK also also overturned a 2-0 deficit against Panathinaikos in the 1984-85 season in the semi-finals of the Greek Cup. After losing 2-0 at the ΟΑΚΑ, PAOK fought back and progressed to the final after eventually winning the second leg 4-0 after extra time.
- 11 – the number of times PAOK and Panathinaikos have been paired in the Greek Cup. It’s only the second time they are meeting at the semi-final stage, however. All of the other previous meetings (6) have come at the semi-final stage, with both teams counting three qualifications apiece.
- In the 2006-07 season, Panathinaikos progressed in their last tie that came in the quarter-finals. The Greens went through in extra time in the second leg via a 3-1 scoreline. PAOK had won the first leg at the Toumba 2-1 (31’ Konstantinidis , 42’ Miecel – 62’ Mantzios).
- in the 1993-94 season in the Round of 16 of the competition, both matches ended 0-0 and following the second leg in Thessaloniki, it was Panathinaikos who went through on penalties after winning the shootout 5-4.
