Valeri to referee the Basel leg
Paolo Valeri from Italy has been assigned by UEFA the second-leg encounter of PAOK in Switzerland against FC Basel for the UEFA Champions League 2nd qualifying round.
Born on 16 May 1978 in Rome, Paolo Valeri started officiating Serie B matches in 2007. In the same season, he was promoted and make his debut in the top flight league. By now he has refereed more than 150 Serie A encounters.
He earned his FIFA badge in 2011 and since then has been appointed to qualifying games of the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League. It’s not the first time he is taking charge of a match featuring a Greek club. He was assigned to Asteras Tripolis’s goalless draw in Portugal against Maritimo for the 2012-13 UEFA Europa League 3rd qualifying round.
This summer, Valeri was one of 13 referees of the VAR team in the FIFA World Cup in Russia, having previous experience of the system in the Coppa Italia.
The Italian referee will be accompanied in St.Jakob-Park by his countrymen Alessandro Giallatini and Alberto Tegoni, the assistant referees, with Maurizio Mariani acting as fourth official. Vladimir Medved from Slovakia is the UEFA Referee Observer for the match and Jean-Paul Mievis the UEFA delegate.
