«We didn’t react well»

Here is what Răzvan Lucescu said after the final whistle of PAOK’s encounter against AEL in Larissa, for matchday 6 of Super League Souroti.

30.09.2017

On the Larissa game:

«We missed out on a three pointer that was practically ours, as we dominated the game throughout. We were in total control in the first half, wasted three opportunities to score with El Kaddouri and Vieirinha, we scored… It was a big battle against Larissa who were very motivated. In the second half, we weren’t as dangerous, but still remained in control and in possession. Unfortunately, we should have been awarded a penalty and the opponent should have been shown a red card. Matos was kicked and pushed from behind, two metres away from goal, as he was about to score. The referee failed to see it and, had he awarded it, we would have taken a 2-0 lead. In the late stages, there was action at both ends and Larissa tried to apply pressure. I am not satisfied with the way we handled possession in the last minutes of the encounter«.

«Another negative aspect of our performance is failing to control the game when in numerical inferiority. That is disappointing and it’s our fault because we didn’t react well. But, sorry for insisting, but I don’t understand why that penalty wasn’t awarded. I have often witnessed referees awarding soft penalties, but this one was clear and he didn’t point to the spot. I will agree with you, if you say that we are also to blame for losing control in the last five minutes of the game. I have to point out something else as well. Club owners should behave differently. I couldn’t believe my eyes seeing a club president spitting our player. Such things shouldn’t happen«.

On refereeing and the cards awarded on Saturday:

«I believe that the fouls of Maurício and Zambrano are not bookable. During half-time, we told the players that they should maintain the same attitude, but it wasn’t easy. It’s the first time I see Larissa so motivated and aggressive. We tried to defend, break into counters, but results in football depend on specific moments of the match. Today such moments weren’t in our favour. I will repeat it: had we been awarded that penalty and Larissa remained with 10 players on the pitch, the scoreboard would read 0-2. We failed to control the last minutes of the encounter, we assume responsibility, but referees should also do their job right. I won’t linger on that subject or comment on the cards. I want what is right: red card for our rival and penalty awarded in favour of Matos«.

On away encounters:

«We have to get over it. In their home ground, our rivals are more aggressive. As I told you earlier, Larissa were also playing and had their share in the way the game unfolded. But, as a conclusion, we had three great chances to score, a penalty not awarded and a red card not shown to our rivals. We didn’t negotiate the last minutes as we should, but the match was practically ours«.
