In the battle for the top six

Paokfc.gr’s Rival Analysis column puts the magnifying glass on this weekend’s opponents Aris, giving you the lowdown on everything you need to know about the Thessaloniki club ahead of our Super League Matchday 17 contest at the Kleanthis Vikelidis Stadium.

04.01.2020

After 16 matches of this season’s Super League Aris are on target to achieve the goals they set at the start of the season. They lie in sixth place and look like they will battle it out with Larissa and Panathinaikos for that spot come what may.

What seems to be the team’s biggest ‘success’ to date is that it seems to have found stability and a sense of calm under new coach Michael Oenning, who was a personal choice of technical director Angelos Charisteas to follow in the footsteps of Savvas Pantelidis and interim boss Apostolos Terzis.

The German technician began life on the Aris bench in dynamic fashion, with three wins and a draw in his first four matches, but in the next six games there was only one victory which came against Volos at the Kleanthis Vikelidis Stadium – a run of form which saw Aris lose its grip a little on sixth place.

Along with Panathinaikos, Aris are the league’s draw specialists with seven apiece. Aris has scored 25 goals and has conceded 18, and is a team that plays with an attacking style of football.

The Yellows’ top scorer is Brown Indeyeand Bruno Gama, both of whom have netted six times, while the team’s chief creative force is Giannis Fetfatzidis, who also has weighed in with five goals.

Aris has already been active in the January transfer window, bringing in Fiorin Durmishaj from Olympiacos.

The injured Martin Tonso is one Aris player who will be missing for the clash at the Kleanthis Vikelidis, while newboy Durmishaj has been included in the squad for the match.

Cuesta, Ehmann, Rose, Velez, Sousa, Larsson, Duguiny, Gama, Mattila, Mancini, Sasha, Indeye, Ba, Korhut, Martinez, Durmishaj, Delizisis, Fetfatzidis
