PAOK internationals: how they fared

Greece put on a promising performance and secured a goalless draw in a hard-fought encounter in Turkey. Olsen’s Sweden secured their participation in the Euro 2016 finals, Cape Verde moved on to the next qualifying stage of the 2018 World Cup and Mak scored a brace against Iceland. Here is how PAOK players fared in their international duty.

They didn’t score against Turkey either, but Greece’s display in Turkey was vastly improved compared to their recent showings. Michael Skibbe opted for a three-man defence and two holding midfielders in order to contain Turkey’s attack and secure a goalless and promising draw.

Had the Greek players been more accurate in their finishing, they might have escaped with a victory from “Fatih Terim Stadium”. Featuring all 90 minutes, Alexandros Tziolis was impeccable defensively and his accurate passing helped Greece’s attacking transition. Giorgos Tzavellas came off the bench at stoppage time, while Stefanos Athanasiadis, Stelios Kitsiou and Dimitris Pelkas remained unused subs.

Slovakia are in excellent form and have the results to show for. Their latest “victims” were Iceland, with Róbert Mak guiding his team to a comeback win. The “Double-Headed Eagle’s” player was in the starting line-up and featured for 75 minutes, during which he scored a brace (58’, 61’) in response to the opener by Olympiacos’ Finnbogason. Erik Sabo was introduced in the encounter after the interval. Michal Ďuriš made it 3-1 in the 81st minute.

Having won 2-1 in the first leg, Sweden booked their place for the Euro 2016 finals with a 2-2 draw in Copenhagen. The one and only Zlatan Ibrahimovic gave Sweden an 2-0 lead, paving the way and Denmark tried to get back into the contest but it was too late. They just managed to equalize through Poulsen (80’) and Vestergaard (90’). Robin Olsen remained on the bench and joined the rest of his teammates in their post-match celebrations.

Cape Verde edged out Kenya and made it to the next qualifying stage in 2018 World Cup qualifiers in the African zone. Garry Rodrigues didn’t get to play. Cape Verde overturned their first-leg 1-0 defeat, thanks to Heldon, who scored a brace.
