Match Report

Never give up...

24.10.2024

In the first half, PAOK paid dearly for their every error. In the second half the Double-headed Eagle never gave up, changed gears, created numerous chances and almost came away with a victory. While that was a disappointment, PAOK still took their first point in the League Phase of the 2024-25 UEFA Europa League and now have five ‘finals’ ahead of them to reach their goal.

After Sunday’s very tough and intense derby at the OPAP Arena against AEK, Razvan Lucescu made several changes to the starting line-up and PAOK came out onto the pitch with the clear aim of dominating the match, getting the ball at their feet and imposing their game. Unfortunately, in the first 45 minutes, everything went wrong. Every mistake cost the hosts, and they made life very difficult for themselves. However, as always, when times are tough, PAOK are always there to fight and give their heart and soul, and the same applies to the supporters in the stands.

PAOK had most of the possession in the first half, but they were unable to create opportunities. On the other hand, the Czechs were incisive. They initially found the net in the second minute, but it was ruled out as offside. PAOK tried to respond with a shot by Sastre in the 10th minute but his effort did not find the target.

In the 20th minute, Taison missed with a header, and then in the 31st minute, Viktoria took the lead through Havel. PAOK tried to react but in the 39th minute the visitors made it 2-0 with only their second chance of the match and PAOK now had a mountain to climb for the rest of the match.

In the second 45 minutes, Lucescu’s men came on strong but missed their first chance with Otto crossing and Jthe visiting ‘keeper Jedlitska making an impressive save.

PAOK had another good chance with Taison shooting and Jedlitska blocking, before Dweh was sent off in the 70th minute after being booked for second time.

With the numerical advantage in their favor and with the energy of the players who came off the bench, PAOK changed gears in the last part of the match, created a stack of chances and managed to come back from the dead.

PAOK created successive opportunities and finally managed to get back into the game in the 84th minute, after Kotarski had kept his team in the game with some good saves earlier. Despodov crossed from the right and Tissoudali made it 2-1 with a wonderful header.

The Toumba then seemed to bubble with anticipation and the atmosphere heated up as the team looked for another goal. Konstantelias missed a great opportunity with a shot from inside the penalty area, Schwab and Colley both missed great opportunities, with the ball also hitting the post, only for Baba to then come and provide the solution and earn the point. The Ghanaian, after Kamara’s headed assist, sent the ball into the net with a powerful header to salvage a draw.

Team lineups:

PAOK: Kotarski, Sastre (Baba 66′), Kedziora, Colley, Otto (Chalov 76′), Bakayoko (Schwab 59′), Kamara, Taison (Despodov 66′), Konstantelias, A.Zivkovic, Brandon (Tissoudali 66′) .

Viktoria Plzen: Jedlitska, Gemelka, Markovic, Dweh, Kalvach, Soika (Cerv 77′), Schulz, Cantu, Havel, Vydra (Zirka 61′), Adu (Heida 73′).
