Match Report

Despite their efforts, they couldn’t find the goal

12.02.2017

PAOK couldn’t break the deadlock against Xanthi in Pigadia, extending however their undefeated streak.

The “Double-Headed Eagle” changed more than half of their starting line-up, put on yet another good performance, but failed to record a second consecutive victory over Xanthi, having to content themselves with the draw point.

The Pigadia game started with recon play by the two sides. In the 7th minute, Panagiotis Deligiannidis squandered a perfect opportunity to give PAOK the lead, failing to connect Stelios Κitsiou’s cross.

As the first half progressed, the “Double-Headed Eagle” were seeing much more of the ball, but struggled to make creative capital out of the situation. In the 36th minute, teed up by Charis Charisis, Djalma Campos fired his close-range header just past the left post.

Three minutes later, the Angolan winger forced a blunder out of the home keeper, but the latter managed somehow to get to Stefanos Athanasiadis’s follow-up shot and block the ball.

PAOK started the second half with all systems go and had a gilt-edged opportunity to take the lead in the 52nd minute. Diego Biseswar was set up by lively Campos, but his close-range shot was cleared by the home side.

A powerful shot by Charisis in the 58th minute and a header by Athanasiadis two minutes later went wide. In the 67th minute, Živković pulled off the save of the match, volleying out Fernando Varela’s header following a free-kick by Biseswar.

Despite the overwhelming pressure applied by the black-and-whites, the match ended goalless, marking however PAOK’s ninth consecutive undefeated encounter in domestic competitions.
