U20s bow out with a defeat
On the last matchday of Super League U20, PAOK signed off with a 2-1 loss to Asteras at Tripolis.
PAOK U20s put on a fine display, but it was not enough to avoid defeat on the last matchday. The “Double-Headed Eagle” finished third –behind Olympiacos and Atromitos- in this transitional season that saw most of 2013-14 champions move to the seniors or to other clubs.
Vladan Ivić started strongly and were in command for most part of the first half. After wasting a few decent goal opportunities, Kushta scored a amazing opener in the 34th minute. He picked the ball in front of the rival goalkeeper and headed it home to give his side the lead. It was his 9th goal in the league.
Asteras Tripolis took the initiative after the interval and managed to level the score at the stroke of the hour. The game tempo increased afterwards with action at both ends of the pitch. In the 75th minute, Asteras were awarded a penalty for handfoul, but Koutoglidis saved the spot kick. Five minutes later, Tselepidis brought down a rival in the area and the referee pointed to the spot again. This time round, Asteras converted their penalty.
Ivić’s troops charged forward for the equalizer and almost got it in the 90th minute, but Asteras goalkeeper got his fingertips on Kushta’s shot. PAOK U20s finished their in the league marathon with a tally of 70 points.
