“Fine job by all players”
What Vladan Ivić said in his press conference, following PAOK’s important victory in Florence.
On his first thoughts after the final whistle:
«I know our potential, I know my players and what we can do as a team. So far, in 85% of our time on the pitch in the Super League and in European competition, we were equally good or even better than our rivals. Today we were good, but were facing a very strong team and we all know what ACF Fiorentina are capable of».
On PAOK’s scorers:
«I know all my players and their potential and I believe in them. We have specific plans and we aim to field the best possible line-up for each game. It would be preferable of course to score more goals, especially in the Super League where we have lost considerable ground. But goals will come and today’s victory will boost our self-confidence».
On the importance of the Florence result:
«PAOK have played lots of good games, regardless of the final results. Don’t forget that we have 8-9 newcomers. A squad can’t be built overnight. These newcomers are gradually getting to know PAOK and they need time –I am speaking about all of them. In football, time is luxury, especially in such a club, but I believe in my players, I am confident they will turn things around».
On whether he got worried after Fiorentina’s equalizer:
«A draw wouldn’t have been the end of us. Our plan all along was to take risks in the final stretch of the match, if needed. If my memory serves me right, Fiorentina enjoyed possession in the second half, but chances were scarce. We were better tactically after the interval, especially compared with our rivals’ midfield, and in the end we had luck on our side and won the game».
On increasing their chances to qualify:
«Of course we are closer than before. There are several matches in between, before matchday 6 of the group stage. Nothing is finished, all teams entertain hope, even the 4th-placed one. We play in our home ground, against a side we defeated away, but it won’t be an easy game. We know what they are capable of and it won’t be easy. We respect all rivals. In our previous matches, we played against a rival whom we underestimated. My aim is to keep my players focused no matter who we play against. In football nowadays everything is possible, therefore we must work hard to defeat every opponent».
On how this victory was achieved:
«We knew our rivals want possession. Despite not fielding all their regulars, they have quality players who can prove dangerous at any time. We closed up spaces, looked for our counterattacking chances and created many chances –we could have scored that third goal sooner. We were disciplined, all players did a fine job and our tactical focus led us to victory».
