«We must prepare for victory»
What Vladan Ivić said in his press conference after the final whistle of the encounter between AEK Athens and PAOK for the Super League play-offs.
On what went wrong:
«I believe we faced several problems, especially in the beginning. We failed to take initiative, didn’t play our game. When a team don’t settle on the ball in the first minutes and don’t make an effort to charge forward, stress kicks in –and that becomes the main problem. Afterwards we had 1-2 chances to score, but actually didn’t attack much. I can’t say that the final result isn’t fair. There are players getting injured in every game, all teams are facing problems. There is still one match ahead and we want to finish on a high note«.
On the fatigue factor:
«That is not an excuse. All teams are tired right now. We may possess the biggest roster, but we also negotiated more matches than the rest of the pack. It has been a very intense season in the league, the Greek Cup and in European competition. We used many players, we all know where we stand and we aim to finish at the top«.
On the dismissal of Malezas:
«He had already received a booking that would make him ineligible for the next match, as it was his fourth. There was no reason to go for a second caution today, but he wouldn’t play anyway after the first one he received«.
On the various absences in his defence, ahead of the last encounter of the season:
«It’s a fact that we have many absentees, but that’s football. We need to prepare with the players at hand for a win«.
On the new season and the fact that there will be more play-off matches:
«There are will be more matches in the play-offs –instead of six, there will be ten play-off matches. All the teams will be tired after a long season. It may be more interesting, as the regular-season leaders will also participate. Perhaps that will make for better performances. There are problems and injuries within all sides. Yesterday we saw our goalkeeper suffer a serious injury. We wouldn’t wish this on anyone«.
On his team’s performances:
«Almost all matches in the play-offs end 1-0. That is the way things go and we are trying to do our job on the pitch«.
On his substitutions:
«I had to make the first substitution in the first half. After so many matches, fitness problems might arise at any given moment. We were already trailing 1-0 and had to be cautious. Our plan was to introduce a forward and play with a three-man defence«.
On Campos:
«Campos faces a hamstring problem. He is the only player of our roster to complain of the same muscular injury three times this season«.
On his players’ protests in the end:
«I don’t want that to happen, it’s not proper. We need to discuss and solve this. The match was over and there was nothing we could do. We must keep a cool head at the end and avoid such situations«.
