Here is a short extract from Adelino Vieirinha’s interview:

On the fans expecting to see the old Vieirinha:

It’s impossible to see that Vieirinha. I have grown, I look at football differently. It’s not that I am incapable of doing what I used to do, but I take the game more seriously now. In the early days, I didn’t think before dribbling while in defence. Now you won’t see me do such a thing. Back then, I wanted to show what I can do. Now, I believe I don’t have to prove the kind of player I am. I have already demonstrated that. I am more collected and I know what I must do at all times. Do you know how many times Fernando Santos had a go at me because I would do backheel tricks and dribbles without any reason? There comes a time when I realized “he was right”.

On Răzvan Lucescu appointing him captain:

I firmly believe that each one should be captain of themselves. It is a lesson learned from all these years sharing the dressing rooms with great players. I don’t want to stand out as a captain, shout to my team-mates and tell them what to do. It’s not in my nature. Who am I to tell others what to do? That is a coach’s duty. In trainings and matches, I prefer to show what I think is right, instead of yelling. Therefore, in my eyes there is no captain. There is just a guy wearing the armband. During the game, I need to listen to what my team-mates tell me and vice versa. That is the only way to advance. But, generally speaking, there is nothing better than being named captain of the team you love. You are the team’s icon, the one who steps forward.
