PAOK – Atromitos: Facts & Figures
Here are some interesting stats and head-to-head data regarding the encounters between PAOK and Atromitos, a few hours before their Greek Cup quarter-final kicks off in Toumba Stadium.
# It’s the sixth time PAOK and Atromitos get paired in the Greek Cup. The “Double-Headed Eagle” have qualified four times and the Peristeri outfit once.
# It’s the first time the two sides will negotiate a two-legged tie. On five previous occasions, they played one leg three times and met in a group stage twice (1993-94 and 2000-01). In 1993, when the Peristeri outfit were in the second tier, they faced each other just once, as the group stage format dictated one-legged encounters. In 2000, when Atromitos were in the third tier, they coincided in group 4 with home and away games.
# They first met for the Greek Cup in 1964-65. On 4 April 1965, PAOK progressed to the round of 16 with a goal by Vasiliadis in the 28th minute in Toumba Stadium. Back then, Atromitos featured in group 1 of B’ Ethniki.
# On 23 June 1968, the two sides met again in the same phase (round of 16) of the competition. At that time, Atromitos were still in the second tier, but highly ranked. Fountoukidis scored the opener for PAOK with a direct free kick and Sakellaridis equalized in the 77th minute. The 1-1 scoreline remained unchanged after extra-time. The procedure of penalty shoot-outs hadn’t been introduced yet in the Greek Cup. Therefore matters got decided by a coin toss. PAOK were the luckier side and progressed to the quarter-finals.
# Their following confrontation took place on 21 September 1993 for group 5 of the Greek Cup. PAOK prevailed 1-0 thanks to a Makis Chavos’s goal in the 79th minute.
# In the two-legged face-off in group 4 of the Greek Cup in 2000-01, Nikos Frousos scored the only goal of the Toumba encounter in the 80th minute. In Peristeri, Dimitris Nalitzis netted a brace (11’, 81’), while Pascal Varihua leveled temporarily for Atromitos.
# The last time PAOK and Atromitos met for the Greek Cup was on 25 January 2012, in a one-legged quarter-final held in Toumba Stadium. The “Double-Headed Eagle” took the lead with Lino in the 28th minute and Sokratis Fytanidis equalized in the 89th minute for Atromitos. In the first minute of extra time, Brito netted the winner for the Peristeri side.
