«I’m not satisfied with the result, we wanted the win»

Read what PAOK coach Abel Ferreira had to say in the post-match news conference held in the press room after the Super Matchday 12 clash against Olympiacos at the Georgios Karaiskakis stadium in Piraeus.

01.12.2019

About the derby match and the result:

«We had opportunities to counter-attack in the game and create good phases, but we only did it once in the second half with [Dimitris] Pelkas’ effort. As I said before, I want to congratulate both teams for producing a good match, but mainly to my own team of course.»

«We know very well that Olympiacos are very strong down the flanks, especially with [Daniel] Podence. For us, our strategy was to try and neutralize the style of play Olympiacos usually execute, including down the wings. We made substitutions for the usual, typical reasons and because of players getting booked. In the first half we did very well, got ourselves in front and looked to push for a second goal.»

«It was logical that our opponents would come at us aggressively in the second half and this was clearly evident when you saw how high up the pitch Olympiacos began to play when they got their goal. After they scored from the penalty spot it was only natural that they would try and push even more for a winning goal. We gave them too much space but managed to defend well and got the point.»

About the referees:

«The referees did a great job. I generally see that there are a lot of complaints about a lot of fouls. I like the game to run myself.»

About Pedro Martins:

«Firstly, Pedro Martins is a coach that I admire. He started from the very bottom. This was not a Ferreira-Martins duel, it was an Olympiacos-PAOK one, and there just happened to be two Portuguese coaches. There is no bad blood between the two of us, we spoke both before and after the game.»

About his team selection and decisions during the match:

«If you look at the players we had today, you saw that on the bench there were players who were some of the key men in last year’s team. However, football is, above all, about performance in both matches and training. Both Ingason and Zivkovic have won their places fairly, but they have also been helped by those who are now on the bench. Everyone knows there is great competition for places, and there are players in every position ready and willing to take any opportunity they get.»

About the result:

«We always playing to win, so no, I’m not happy. But, having said that, considering how the game evolved, I think it was a fair result.»

About what happened before the match:

«I get on with everyone and I’ll tell you something that might cost me. Olympiacos without PAOK and PAOK without Olympiacos may not be the same. If all of us want to improve and grow, and if I came to Greece to try and help on this aspect, I think it’s important that you understand that I really liked the atmosphere inside the stadium. The fans were urging their team forward, they were on their feet trying to push them, the atmosphere was good. However, I can’t say the same about our arrival at the ground. I did not like the situation when we arrived. I don’t think that Tottenham needed to get off their bus so far away and walk that same distance we did to get to the changing rooms. Olympiacos has a very good team and a very good stadium; they can handle any opponent, so they don’t need all those things that went on.»
