Paokfc.gr aims to get you in the mood for the match against Lille at the Decathlon Arena – Stade Pierre Mauroy for the third matchday of the League Phase of the 2025/26 UEFA Europa League. Read some interesting information and statistics about the background of the match.
- This is the seventh time that PAOK has faced a team from France and the first time that they will face Lille. In their matches against French clubs, they have two qualifications, three eliminations and one victory in an indifferent match for the Europa League group stages.
- The first match with a French team came in the 1973-74 season with PAOK competing in the Cup Winners’ Cup and in the 2nd round after having previously eliminated Legia Warsaw, they were drawn with Lyon. A 3-3 draw in France (10′ Lacomb, 51′ Di Nalo, 65′ Ravier – 44′ Aslanidis, 50′ Terzanidis, 81′ Sarafis), laid the foundations for qualification, which was confirmed with a triumphant 4-0 win at the Toumba Stadium (25′ Paridis, 39′ Aslanidis, 61′ Paridis, 81′ Terzanidis).
- PAOK played in the European Cups for the first time in the club’s history then and in the spring and in March 1974 faced Milan in the quarter-finals of the Cup Winners’ Cup, with a 3-0 defeat in Milan for the first leg and a 2-2 draw in Thessaloniki.
- The next qualification was against Sochaux, in 1982-83, for the UEFA Cup in the 1st round of the competition. A 1-0 victory in Thessaloniki (78′ Chr. Dimopoulos) was the «dowry» for the second leg, which was decided in extra time with Christos Dimopoulos scoring to make it 1-1 in the 95th minute and the final 2-1 aggregate win giving the qualification to the Double-headed Eagle, who in the 2nd round were eliminated by Sevilla.
- The next tie was against Paris Saint-Germain and in addition to the elimination from the 1st round of the UEFA Cup, it also brought the punishment in European competitions for the club after everything that happened in the match at the Toumba with the French team. PAOK had lost 2-0 in the 1st leg in Paris and the half-time score at the Toumba was again 2-0 in favour of Paris when incidents broke out and the match was abandoned.
- In the 2005-06 Europa League group stage, PAOK defeated Rennes 5-1 in one of their most productive nights in European competition. The score was opened by an own goal by Rosa in the third minute, followed by goals by Christodoulopoulos (38), Yiasoumi (79, 89), and Salpingidis (83).
- In 2014-15, they met Guingamp for the Europa League group stage, where there was a 2-1 defeat at the Toumba (22′ Athanasiadis- 7′, 83′ Beauvais) and a 2-0 defeat in France.
- In 2021-22, PAOK faced Marseille for the quarter-finals of the Conference League. In the first match, Marseille prevailed 2-1 and won the second leg 1-0.
- Overall, PAOK have recorded three wins, one draw and seven losses in 11 matches with teams from France.
- Lille, for their part, have faced two Greek teams. They met Olympiacos once in the Champions League (1 win – 1 loss) and twice with AEK in the UEFA Cup (1 win) and in the Champions League (1 win – 1 loss).
