- PAOK face Celta for the second time in Spain in this year’s Europa League and this will be the fourth match in total with a Spanish team during the current season. There are the previous two with Celta, but also the one on January 22, 2026 against Real Betis, who PAOK defeated 2-0. The two teams had met for the 2nd matchday of the League Phase in Spain, where the Double-headed Eagle were defeated 3-1.
- The match last Thursday at the Toumba ended in a 2-1 victory for the Spaniards. In total, PAOK have faced eight teams from Spain in thier history in European competitions. There are now 16 matches (three wins – five draws – eight losses) and three qualifications, four eliminations in knockout matches, while in the rest have been in a group stage.
- The first meeting was with Barcelona, who had a certain Johan Cruyff in their ranks. On September 16, 1975, PAOK won 1-0 in Thessaloniki (72’ Koudas) and in the return match, the Double-headed Eagle lost 6-1.
- In the next two meetings with teams from Spain, they faced Sevilla, in 1982-83 and 1990-91, and were eliminated both times. In their first meeting, PAOK won 2-0 at the Toumba and lost 4-0 in Spain.
- In 1990-91, no goals were scored in 210 minutes of matches and qualification was decided on penalties, where the Spaniards prevailed 4-3 at the Toumba.
- This was followed by the matches with Atletico Madrid in 1997-98, where PAOK were defeated 5-2 in Spain and in the return match there was an impressive 4-4 draw.
- The 2010-11 season was the first tie in the group stage, where the matches with Villarreal ended with a victory for each team, 1-0 in Spain for Villarreal and 1-0 in Thessaloniki for PAOK.
- In 2020-21, PAOK were in the same group as Granada and the matches ended with two goalless draws.
- In the League Phase of the Europa League on January 30, 2025 they were defeated 2-0 in Spain by Real Sociedad.
- Celta will face a third Greek team in PAOK. Their previous clashes were in 1999 against Aris and in 2016 against Panathinaikos. In both of these cases, the Galician club qualified, while in four matches their record was three wins and one draw.
