PAOK B taek step towards preserving Super League 2 status

PAOK B struggled to find their rhythm, found themselves a goal behind, but ultimately managed to turn the situation around and finally beat a battling but already-relegated PAS Giannina to earn three vital points in their bid to stay up.

With three matches left until the end of the Super League 2 play-outs, PAOK B are top of the table with 27 points, Nestos Chrysoupolis following in second with 26 and Kavala with 20.

Although PAS played with a player less from the 27th minute, due to Naoumis being sent off for collecting a second yellow card, PAOK B were off the pace given the circumstances. The visitors had a goal disallowed for offside, while only a great save by Nikolakoulis in the 21st minute denied PAS the lead, before the Ioannina club finally took a deserved lead in the 33rd minute. Fiogbe latched on to a set piece to score the goal, and PAS went into half-time with a 1-0 lead.

PAOK B obviously had no other choice but to recover afterwards. From the 50th minute they pressed, recording three good chances. In the 52nd minute, Jimenez released Tsopouroglu with a through ball, but the latter missed the target, while in the 54th minute, Raihani did the same, taking the ball from Gitersos and he should have scored, and then after good work by Dunga down the left in the 56th minute, Ladias saved from Raihani. The equalizing goal eventually came in the 63rd minute when Tsopouroglu and Raihani combined well, with the latter finally finding the net for 1-1.

Given their numerical advantage, the Double-headed Eagle dominated possession, often making inroads into the opposition penalty area. In the 71st minute, Dunga crossed, Gitersos found Kanis, who was however denied by Ladias. Three minutes later, Moustma and Jimenez combined nicely, but the Spaniard’s shot went just wide. Finally, PAOK achieved the comeback and long-awaited victory in the 89th minute with Kalaitsidis, after a header from Kottas , who jumped higher than everyone to convert Jimenez’s corner kick.

The next game for PAOK B is a home game against Nestos Chrysoupolis on 18.04.
