Aiming to surprise

Paokfc.gr’s Rival Analysis column hones in on this weekend’s opponents Volos, giving you the lowdown on everything you need to know about the Magnesia club before our Super League Matchday 8 contest at the Panthessaliko stadium.

26.10.2019

The club was founded in the summer of 2017, when third tier outfit Pydna Kitros was dissolved and renamed the Volos New Football Club. The club is better known now as simply Volos FC and it is participating in the Super League for the first time in its short, three-year history.

Volos managed to celebrate two promotions from the third division and the Football League in two successive seasons, and this season is making its debut with the big boys. It’s a journey that everyone at the club hopes will last for many years.

Over the summer there was an extreme makeover in terms of the playing staff. In essence, the team that enjoyed two promotions in as many seasons was disbanded and a brand new squad of young and talented players brought in. There were 23 transfers to be precise.

The squad was then given a new coach in Juan Ferrando. The 36-year-old Spanish coach has a wealth of experience despite his relatively young age for a coach, having worked Spain’s lower leagues, as well as Malaga B, Sheriff Tiraspol, and La Masia. He also had stints in the coaching setups at Arsenal, Brighton and Ergotelis.

The first fruits of the club’s labor have been extremely encouraging. Volos play attractive and attacking football against every opponent they come up against, without fear. In its first seven games of the season, Volos have won three and lost four, beating Panionios (2-1), Aris (1-0) and OFI (1-0), while losing to Olympiacos (5-0), Atromitos (2-3), AEK (3-2) and Xanthi (3-1).

Argentine forward Joaquin Torres is a player who is proving a revelation for the Magnesia team. He already has four goals in four matches, and the likes of Ferrari, Muniz, and Jendrisek, are all making an impact, along with Diamantis, Lyratzis and Balogiannis – three players who are on loan from PAOK.
