«We need all of our players ready for battle»

Post-match quotes from Abel Ferreira following the final whistle of the match against Panetolikos on Super League Matchday 14.

On how he manages to get results using players from the bench

«It’s true that this has been happening lately. Look, all of this is a job, which everybody needs to be involved in during the entire season. The point is to have all of your players ready for battle. We saw against Xanthi with Diego Biseswar who came on and scored, and also served up an assist. Today it was Akpom. From day one since I came here I said that I want a team whose shining star is the team itself. A team, a squad which collectively has a specific identity and character which is independent of each and every player within it.»

Today we saw that identity out there on the pitch. We had intensity and stuck to our gameplan. This PAOK team today showed how powerful it is – in the full sense of the word. It’s something I try to keep in in mind, that what happens on the pitch is not usually the result of my work, but from those squad players who have not been starting. Sometimes people forget about them, but I don’t. For example, it was difficult to leave out Biseswar after the previous game, but everyone knows that I have full confidence in them and that their opportunities will come.»

On why he started Vierinha and Maurcio and replaced Pelkas in the second half:

«I don’t think of the players individually. What we needed when the changes were made was to freshen up the team. We are a team that likes to push forward and that means the attacking players have to put a lot of pressure on our opponents as well. At around 60-65 minutes in all games our changes are about freshening up the midfield, but what I have to say about both Pelka and Swiderski is that both played very well. As did their replacements in Akpom and El Kaddouri «

On his instructions to the players at half-time:

«I asked them if they like the ball and if they want to have it at their feet. I told them that the ball is our friend and we need to treat it like our family. We had the ball but then we basically stopped playing. I told them that we’re PAOK, and we have a clear identity to live up to – we have to get out there and really play. We have to play under pressure and I think we did a good job today. It was a good game overall for us. Maybe we could have scored more goals, but we don’t want to repeat the situation what happened after we scored our first goal.»

On replacing Matos in the final few minutes of the game:

«I always expect more from Matos . What we wanted to try with bringing Varela on was to play with five defenders, i.e. with three central defenders and two wing-backs in Giannoulis and Limnios and see how the team would react. Matos had also been booked shortly before and I didn’t want to risk another card. If he hadn’t picked up that yellow card I would probably have put Esiti in. «
