Ahead of PAOK’s Super League Matchday 22 clash against Panathinaikos, paokfc.gr puts you in the picture about the background to the match, as well as a look back at our previous encounters against the Greens.
- 4 – the number of successive matches Panathinaikos had gone without scoring against PAOK until the 2-2 draw between the two side’s earlier this season. From May 31st, 2017, following a 3-2 win for PAOK in the Play Offs, the Athenian club did not register a goal against PAOK in the league.
- During that period, PAOK chalked up four wins, two at the Tumba and two in Athens, with a goals tally that read 11-0. That is the best series of matches in history between the two teams from 1959-60 – the year the the Greek top flight was established. The next best series came from May 28th, 1972 up to April 18th, 1973, when over the course of five matches in the league and Greek Cup, PAOK recorded five wins in a row. One of those matches, however, was a 2-0 win on paper due to a punishment following a match against Olympiacos.
- From December 4th 2016, the two teams met again on April 29th 2018 in a league match with Panathinaikos the home side. PAOK came away from Athens with a 3-0 win, thank to goals from Prijovic (27’, 65’) and Shakhov (84’). Panathinaikos had won 1-0 in December 2016 courtesy of a goal from Lod after 69 minutes, and that was the Greens’ last victory over the Dikefalos tou Vorra in a home match.
- In the last match played in Athens on March 3rd, 2019, PAOK ran out 2-0 winners thanks to goals from Mauricio (8’) and Leo Jaba (47’).
- The three matches before that were all draws. Firstly on February 21 2016, there was a 2-2 draw (10’ Berg, 51’ Kaltsas– 56’ Chimirot, 67’ Pelkas ). The next two matches were in the Play Offs and both ended 1-1, firstly in Athens (46’ Berg – 49’ Charisis), and then in Thessaloniki (17’ Rodriguez – 26’ Lod).
- 67 matches have taken place between Panathinaikos and PAOK with the Dikefalos tou Vorra as the visiting team. In those matches PAOK has recorded eight wins, 16 draws and 43 defeats.
- 4 – the number of wins PAOK have achieved in a regular match over 90 minutes, while there was also one match in the 1972-73 season by a 2-0 scoreline on paper due to the fact Panathinaikos were given a two-game punishment after crowd trouble in a derby against Olympiacos. On that day the two teams played a friendly match which ended 3-3. Also, PAOK were the beneficiaries of a 3-0 win on paper in the last match played between the two teams at Leoforos Alexandras during the Play Offs following an injury to former PAOK coach Vladan Ivic.
- 7 – the number of successive matches PAOK went without a defeat to Pananthinaikos from December 1st, 1974 up until March 7th, 1981 when the Dikefalos tou Vorra lost 2-1. The seven other matches ended in draws.
- On January 20th, 1985 PAOK earned its first away win over Panathinaikos at the ΟΑΚΑ with a goal from Papritsas helping PAOK record a 1-0 win in the 79th minute – a result which took PAOK to the top of the league at the half-way point in a season that they would eventually be crowned champions.
- 11 – the number of times matches against Panathinaikos have ended in a 2-0 score to the Greens. That result is the most popular in matches between the two teams. After that, it’s 1-0 with a total of eight matches, while seven games have ended 0-0 and another seven via a 2-1 winning scoreline for the Athenian club.
- 9 – the number of goals scored in matches between the two teams by Dimitris Saravakos and Krzysztof Warzycha, who are the joint top scorers,while for PAOK, Dimitris Salpingidis has scored three times and Stefanos Athanasiadis has scored two.
