A strange season comes to an end
The marathon-like and extremely strange season that was 2019-20 concluded for PAOK on Sunday with a goalless draw at the Toumba Stadium against Aris on Matchday 10 of the Super League Play Offs.
A seemingly never-ending season full of countless difficulties, injuries, misfortunes, court cases, committees, Covid-19, and much more, finally did come to an end, with another strange game to finish it off.
The curtain fell on the Toumba with the Dikefalos tou Vorra unable to find a way to get a victory, with Aris and its ’12’ players managing to get a result, with plenty of luck on their side.
PAOK started the match strongly, with Julian Cuesta making an impressive save from Mauricio’s, header after just three minutes, with Diego Biseswar sending the ball onto the post from the follow-up. The visitors set up their stall to defend, trying to close down any space available and allowed the Dikefalos tou Vorra to have possession.
Ferreira’s players threatened throughout, mostly from shots, while in the 34th minute another double chance went begging when Cuesta saved from Christos Tziolis who was clean through, and then Souza headed the ball off the line from Omar El Kaddouri’s shot.
In the second half, the tempo of the game dropped significantly, and there were a flurry of stoppages for injuries and substitutions, as well as the cooling break. PAOK failed to find a way past the Aris defence and that resulted in the match ending goalless.
The Dikefalos tou Vorra ended the post season of this season’s Super League in second place, clinching a place in the UEFA Champions League qualifiers.
