The first time they did it was in the 2002-03 season, when the Double-headed Eagle faced Leixões, beating the Portuguese team 4-1 in the second leg. Then the second time was in 2015-16 when following a 2-1 loss to Lokomotiv, PAOK progressed thanks to an impressive 6-0 win in the return match.
- The last time PAOK faced Russian opposition was in the 2018-19 season against Spartak Moscow in the Champions League qualifiers. A 3-2 win (29′ Projovic, 37′ Limnios, 44′ Pelkas – 7′ Popov, 17′ Promes) laid the foundations for qualification which came after the teams drew 0-0 in Russia.
- This is the seventh season that the Double-headed Eagle is competing in the Champions League qualifiers and is aiming for a historic first qualification to the group stage.
- The first time was in the 2004-05 season against Maccabi Tel Aviv, the second time against Ajax in 2010-11, the third, in 2013-14, saw PAOK face Metalist and then Schalke, while in 2016-17 the opposition was Ajax once again in the 3rd qualifying round. In the 2018-19 season, PAOK started against FC Basel, whom it knocked out thanks to two wins, before going on to eliminate Spartak Moscow, only to fall to Benfica. In the 2019-20 season PAOK faced Ajax for the third time in the qualifying stages.
- This season PAOK started with a tie against Besiktas, progressing thanks to a 3-1 win with the goals scored by Tziolis, who grabbed two, and Pelkas. That win saw PAOK qualifying to face Benfica in the 3rd qualifying round.
- Overall, PAOK have played 20 times in qualifying matches and have a total record of 4 wins, 7 draws, and 9 losses. Five of the draws have been away matches. PAOK has scored 29 goals in those matches, with Prijovic the top scorer with four. Christos Tziolis, Dimitris Pelkas , Vladan Ivic, Stefanos Athanasiadis, and Diego Biseswar all have two each. Also on the scorers list with one goal apiece are Stoch, Nechid, Katsouranis, Giasoumis, Vieirinha , Salpingidis, Djalma, Limnios, Canas, Varela , El Kaddouri , Warda, Akpom , Leo Matos and A.Zivkovic.
- This is the fifth time that PAOK is up against a team from Russia. Up to now the Greek side have faced four different clubs in the UEFA Cup, as well as in the Champions League qualifiers.
- The only time PAOK progressed from those previous ties was in the Champions League, in the 2018-19 season when the Double-headed Eagle overcame Spartak Moscow in the third qualifying round. However, PAOK were eliminated by their next opponents Benfica and failed to qualify for the Champions League group stages.
- The first time PAOK faced a Russian club was in the 2010-11 season in the Europa League Round of 32 against CSKA Moscow, when they were eliminated after losing 1-0 at the Toumba and drawing 1-1 away in Russia (80′ Ignasevic – 67′ Muslimovic).
- In the following season, Rubin Kazan were the opponents in the group stage of the Europa League, with both games ending in a draw. Firstly, the teams drew 2-2 (52′ Nelson Valdes, 66′ Dyadyun – 22′ Athanasiadis, 80′ Fotakis) in Russia and then the match at the Toumba ended 1-1 (15′ Vierinha – 48′ Nelson Valdes).
In the 2015-16 campaign, PAOK faced today’s opponents, Krasnodar. After a 0-0 draw at the Toumba, PAOK lost 2-1 (Ari ’33 Joazinho ’67 PEN) – 90′ Mak) in Russia.
