Battling PAOK go down fighting
PAOK went to Spain with ten absentees, a 1-2 deficit from the first leg, but they didn’t give up. The players avaialble left their hearts and souls on the Balaidos pitch, gave everything they had, and bid farewell to Europe with their heads held high.
PAOK lined up with several changes in Spain, with Tsiftsis, Baba, Kedziora, Michailidis and Kenny in defense, Zafeiris and Ozdoev in central midfield, Bianco in front of them, Giakoumakis up top, with Hatsidei and Sanchez alongside him in the wide roles.
PAOK threatened first in the third minute with a header from Michailidis, with Celta’s main concern being to keep PAOK away from their penalty area and look for counter-attacking opportunities.
The Double-headed Eagle were moving the ball around well on the putch, did not take too many big risks and tried to be threatening, with Giakoumakis getting a header in the 17th minute, but not finding the target.
Celta tried to threaten with shots from Vesino and Svedberg, while PAOK in the 42nd minute saw Michailidis set up Giakoumakis with a headed pass, but Celta ‘keeper Radu saved the Greek forward’s effort.
The 0-0 scoreline did not change until the half-time break. In the second half, Celta came on strong and tried to threaten in the 50th minute, but Tsiftsis had the answer to Iglesias’ shot.
The phase that was to largely determine the outcome of the match came in the 63rd minute, with Celta finding a goal with a smart, side-footed shot from Svedberg after a pass from Iglesias.
PAOK tried to react, and they had a good moment in the 85th minute with Jeremejeff sending over a cross, but the ball deflected off a defender, and they could not find the goal that would put them back in the game.
PAOK have now completed their European journey for this season and will now turn their full attention to the Stoiximan Super League and the Greek Cup.
